Kerry-Lynne Findlay, P.C., D.S.J., Q.C., B.A., J.D., M.P. International Women's Day -- #BreakTheBias
The Hon. Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay currently serves in the Parliament of Canada as the Member of Parliament for the riding of South Surrey—White Rock in British Columbia. Shortly after election in October 2019, Kerry-Lynne was appointed as Shadow Minister for the Environment and Climate Change for the Official Opposition, serving in that capacity through October 2020.
In March of this year, Kerry-Lynne was named the Conservative Party’s representative on CANZUK relations. Since then, Kerry-Lynne has met with politicians and thought-leaders from across the four CANZUK nations, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, to build momentum for this visionary international alliance.
In October 2020, Kerry-Lynne was named to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. As a lawyer and former administrative law judge on the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, she is very familiar with justice issues.
Kerry-Lynne is a member of the White Rock Rotary Club and a former member of the Rotary Club of Vancouver. Jim Evans wife, Diana Lam, is one of her sorority sisters.

Chris Loat, Rotarian and Humanitarian
Chris will be speaking about a very successful project our club helped fund, Girls Helping Girls Stay in School that was established as a not-for-profit social enterprise the Rotary Hygiene and Sanitation Social Enterprise ROSSEL in Kampala Uganda for menstrual hygiene management training and the production of sanitary pads and the RC Bulindo WASH program which is providing water and sanitation for a school and local community in Kira township Uganda.
While the objective is to raise funds, the emphasis will truly be on the FUN. Unlike last year, we can actually do this IN PERSON as well as online. Members will receive an email ahead of time with a link to the auction items up for bid that can be shared with family, friends, virtually anyone around the world!
The online bidding will be available for a couple of weeks or so, and then the finale will take place at the Terminal City Club during our regular meeting time slot on Tuesday April 12th beginning at noon, with our returning live auctioneer Paul Martin!!! While we did talk about the potential of this being an evening event, we are now confirming that it will indeed be mid-day.
Our ask to you?
For this to again be a success, there needs to be enticing auction items! Please review this short list of ideas to launch your thinking as to how you can contribute:
share your culinary skill by offering an online cooking class
create and deliver a bottle of wine and dinner for 2
perhaps you have a vacation condo, AirBnB or timeshare
arrange an experience with a "I’ve-always-wanted-to-do-that factor!" - tour a winery, brewery, horseback riding, skydiving, heli-hiking, adventure tour, movie-studio tour, access to typically inaccessible-to-the-public spaces and/or businesses, etc.
know a celebrity who would donate his/her time for an online chat?
gift cards always do well
donate your expertise! Are you a lawyer who would draft a will? A massage therapist for pain or stress relief? Can you gain access to a movie set? Perhaps you're a fashionista who could provide wardrobe advice?
As you can see from the above list, we're hoping for more "experience" type auction items rather than physical objects.

The S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation is thrilled to announce that the 2022 Bridge to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Gala will be taking place on Saturday, April 23rd, 2022. at the JW Marriott PARQ hotel. We are proud to be celebrating our 45th anniversary so please join us for this special occasion! Over the past 45 years, these events have raised funds to support S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s essential programs for youth, women, refugees, and families.
This year’s Gala will be a hybrid format, with the option to attend in person or with live streaming from home. Attendees will enjoy a fun-filled experience with live entertainment, as well as activities including an Online Silent Auction, Live Auction, and raffle prizes.
The theme for this year’s gala is ‘CommUNITY & Resilience’ as we recognize the ongoing efforts that have been made by so many during the pandemic. Our fundraising goal for this event is $425,000.

President’s Announcements:
Thank you to all of you who came to today’s meeting. It is wonderful to see you all, both those in person and those attending virtually.
Thanks to those who have come forward with suggestions for speakers. Please keep the ideas coming. We want to be sure our content is interesting, entertaining, and varied. While we still have hybrid meetings, there is no geographical limit. For our newer members, the only limits are that we do not accept any appeals for funding (those are to go to the respective committees for consideration), nor are we a forum for political postering or campaigning Contact speakers@rotaryvancouver.org or Jim Evans if you have some ideas.
A reminder as noted above: Our youth service committee is holding a fundraising auction in April. They are working hard to make it a fun and successful event. Please help by donating an exciting experience for the live auction, or something for the silent auction. Joan is spearheading the event so contact her to discuss options.

Paul McCrea shared, particularly for our newer members, that it was in 1992 when District 5040 sent a delegation of Rotarians to the former Soviet Union to assist with establishing the first Rotary Club in Kiev in the Ukraine. These Rotarians included members of our own club. Paul encouraged everyone to open their hearts and minds to support those affected by the terrible circumstances in Ukraine and help in any way one can. He and his wife will be opening their home to provide housing when the opportunity arises to do so.

Our club supports so many worthy causes through our various committees. Today we heard from two organizations who have benefitted from funding provided through our Community Service Committee. Rene Abi-Rached, co-chair of the Community Service Committee introduced our speakers.
Talitha Koum Society
Ms. Mary O’Neill, Acting Executive Director spoke to us about Talitha Koum as Candice, who has benefitted immensely from their services.
Talitha Koum Society (TK) is a non-profit organization empowering women with addictions to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. They do this by providing a home, a nurturing community, 12-step programming, and life-skills training. Since 1999 TK has operated intimate residential homes for women (and their children up to six years old) recovering from addiction. TK’s individualized treatment and recovery for marginalized women with a history of addiction attempts to treat the whole person, not just the substance use, irrespective of age, race, or religion in a safe, nurturing home environment.
Our club has provided ongoing support for a variety of needs at Talitha Koum Society over a period of a few years.

Odd Squad Productions Society (OSP)
Detective David Steverding, Team Coordinator, spoke about Odd Squad Productions.
OSP is a charitable organization comprised of active and retired police officers and dedicated volunteers and is recognized as an international leader in the field of drug and gang education for youth. Since 1997, OSP has been founded on the principles of prevention education.
OSP partnered with addictions and educational experts and has experienced exponential growth and reach.
They deliver high-quality crime prevention and drug awareness educational videos to today’s youth. In an ever-changing landscape where youth face difficult choices, enormous peer pressure, and the most readily available and potent drugs in history, their program delivery structure is the roadmap that will position them to continue to meet the needs of youth today and in the future.
Our Club via CSC funded youth to attend and train at the Odd Squad facility for one year, and funded students to participate in an overnight camping trip as part of The Duke of Edinburgh's award.
