What does a Cold War with China look like? How are public and government thinking in Canada shifted? What is the right balance of Coexistence, Cooperation, Competition, and Confrontation? What are the implications of the war in Ukraine?
Paul Evans is the HSBC Chair in Asian Research in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at UBC. His recent writings and public commentary have focused on Canada-China relations and growing strategic competition between the United States and China.

Thank you to all of you who came to enjoy the companionship of your fellow club Rotarians, and to those who logged in virtually.
Quick commentary on speakers. The quality of the speakers we present affects the numbers who attend. We want to have top notch speakers who are of interest to our members, and more. In your wildest imagination what do you want to hear about? We’ll do our best to source a speaker if you don’t know one. Please submit your suggestions to speakers@rotaryvancouver.org. Jim Evans is joined by Bill Davidson and Christian Nielsen working to review and secure speakers.

Reminder of the fundraiser hosted by the RC of Richmond, Sept 17th as noted in last week’s Rotor bulletin: It is a Humanitarian Relief Concert raising funds for the Ukraine Relief Fund and Rotary Foundation for Humanitarian projects. Tickets are $40 pp or $100 for VIP ticket. See above for information.

The September 20th Tuesday meeting will be an evening meeting replacing the regular luncheon. It will be at Terminal City Club starting at 6:30 to allow for less expensive parking in the neighbourhood. The hope is it will encourage those who cannot make the luncheons to attend. If you can attend, please reach out to another member, especially one who hasn't been attending, to bring them along with you.

Special announcements and Members' Moments:
Eric Peach, the VP of the Vancouver Young Professionals Rotaract Club received the $300 Bill Richwa Award. He provided a comprehensive update on what their club has been and will be doing. Very busy, very active group!
Nathan Hesketh informed us of a RWH container heading to Cuba being loaded this weekend, Sept 10th. Let Nathan know if you would like to help so they know how many to expect.
Rene Abi-Rached on behalf of the Community Service Committee introduced a video presented by ODD Squad Productions that demonstrated where our funds are being used to help youth.
End Polio Day is coming up October 24th. SAVE THE DATE for a Walk to End Polio event.
The District 5040 2023 Conference will be right here in downtown Vancouver at the Pinnacle Hotel. Wayne Fraser will be the MC. We would like to have our club key in the planning process. If you can help out, kindly let Kendall or Wayne know asap.
Our club has historically and continues to have very active committees. A few items for all members to ponder, get involved, provide suggestions:
Fellowship: What kind of activities or events would you like us to do? We have in the past had great fellowship events from which there was a long hiatus with Covid restrictions, etc. Now it's time to have fun together once again. Let the ideas flow and let's set some dates. E.g., learn to curl lessons, Whistler weekend (always a great success), pub nights, etc.
Public Image: If you have an interest in this area, that would include but not limited to social media presence, website stories. Contact Darren Radbourne, the Director of PR, or Brittany Ford, the Chair of the committee.
Fundraising: The Ride for Hearing is a signature fundraiser for our club supporting the hearing foundation and its related initiatives. We would like to have new fundraising activities to help fund other club projects. Preferably something or things that are fun and will draw from the public at large. If you would like to be part of a think tank committee to review feasibility of ideas, kindly put your name forward to Kendall or Carolyn.
Environmental: a brand new committee that will be working to get off the ground shortly has 4 members so far. Christian Nielsen will chair so if interested contact him.
International: The current co-chairs, Michael Woolnough & Ian Storrs are looking to have some new blood leading the committee. Fresh eyes, fresh ideas and all that. Contact either of them if you are interested in joining the committee or in learning how to lead it.
Membership: An important question moving forward in a changing world -- what qualities are we looking for in new members? How do we find them? How do we set the number of members we seek for the year? How do we, not just for new members but for current members also, ensure members are engages and happy. Looking for someone who can take on a co-chair role, working with Franz Gehriger.
