UPCOMING MEETING JULY 26, 2022
Santa J. Ono, President & Vice-Chancellor, UBC
Prior to his appointment as the 15th President and Vice-Chancellor of UBC, Dr. Ono served as the 28th President of the University of Cincinnati and Senior Vice-Provost and Deputy to the Provost at Emory University. He also served as Professor of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He is the president-elect and will be the 15th President of the University of Michigan in October 2022, thus ending his 6 year tenure at UBC.
A molecular immunologist educated at the University of Chicago and McGill, Dr. Ono has taught at Johns Hopkins, Harvard University and University College London. He has advised national and regional governments on higher education and mental health. He has also advised companies such as GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Merck and Novartis on R&D, and served as Director and Chief Scientific Officer of iCo Therapeutics Inc.
Dr. Ono has served on a number of editorial boards, including Immunology, The Journal of Biological Chemistry, The Journal of Immunology and The Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology.
He has been inducted as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, the National Academy of Inventors, USA and the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars. In 2022, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
He holds Honorary Doctorates from Chiba University and the Vancouver School of Theology and is a recipient of the Reginald Wilson Diversity Leadership Award from the American Council on Education, the Professional Achievement Award from University of Chicago, a Grand Challenges Hero Award from UCLA and the NAAAP 100 Award from the National Association of Asian American Professionals. President’s Announcements:
Thank you to all of you who came to Tuesday’s meeting. It is wonderful to see you all, both those in person and those attending virtually. The room is getting progressively fuller with the related joyful buzz of friends meeting filling the air. This week we had 48 people in-person. Looking forward to seeing our pre-covid numbers on a regular basis.

Phil & Shoshana Webber highlighted our club’s white and blue Rotary flags. The white ones have been in the club for years. We have now added the blue ones with the updated branding. Phil will contact the city to get permission to have them fly on the 12 flag poles in English Bay for a week next spring. A wonderful way to promote Rotary.
Bill Schulz let us know that Leo Allas’ memorial service held on Saturday July 9th was well attended. During the ceremony it was acknowledged all that Leo did for our club during his time as RCoV Rotarian, a period of 31 years not to mention his years prior in another club.
Franz Gehriger acknowledged all of the volunteers who made the 37th Ride For Hearing event such a success, especially Jack Zaleski for whom this is his legacy. They had 169 riders and have already raised $150K. The incredibly hard working committee will be reviewing the feedback in preparation of making next year’s event even better.
A shout out to Stu Bird who generously matched $10,000 in donations, and to Paul Martin who worked the room marvellously as MC.
Program:
Franz Gehriger introduced guest speaker, Peter Hildebrand, Architect AIBC, LEED AP, MRAIC and Principal at Iredale Architecture. Probably the most creative architect Franz has ever known. Peter worked with Franz on imagining and bringing to fruition the Xchange building. He creates non-stop, so obviously Peter’s passion.
Peter acknowledged that he is very passionate about what he does. He is surrounded by great team who bring the ideas to reality. Peter has been personally been working with indigenous communities for about 30 years now and has built many fascinating buildings through that time. When it comes to indigenous communities, the buildings go deep into their sole. We do nothing less than sophisticated designs. It is very gratifying work with each opportunity bringing something new to the table.
Peter shared images of some of Iredale’s work, where and what the design theme was built around:
Squamish – wings spreading and ready to fly
Outma Squlz’w – Penticton – grown from the earth
PIB Health Centre, Penticton – drawing inspiration from the land
Sk’elep school, Kamloops – protected from the heat and highway noise
Doig River Community – fire sole & heart of the community, spun from that
Doig River Cultural Centre, Doig River (north of Fort St. John) – passive house was the requirement (at the time was the northern most passive house built)
Tl’etinquox School, Anaham (near Williams Lake) – bird of prey themed
Snaw-Naw-As Marketplace, Lantzville (Vancouver Island) – no theme to work from per se, incorporated traditional west coast
Park Royal Offices, West Vancouver – incorporated first nation design with art and on glasswork
West Moverly Health Centre, Moberly Lake – a passive design (passive design maximizes the natural light, heat, and air movement in a specific location in order to create a comfortable interior environment that reduces the need for energy to light, warm, and cool a building)
Adams Lake Bank Administration Centre – Salmon is a significant part of their culture, used salmon for form, colour, texture
Skatin Administration Centre, Pemberton – a black bear
Haisla Multiplex, Kitamaat Village – long house
The choice of materials is extremely important. It needs to be easy to maintain and long-lived. Keeping the beauty for years and years.
In closing, Peter expressed that it is one thing to design, another to experience the incredible excitement when the design comes to life and to see the client’s reaction as they see their vision in our building.
