Program:
Charles Flavelle introduced this week's speaker, Sam Sullivan, MLA and former Mayor of Vancouver. Sam never stops dreaming. He was an Alderman for 12 years, Mayor for one term, and is now in his 2nd term as Liberal MLA. He created the Public Office Project (POP) with Bradley Shende of the BC Green Party, as a non-partisan organization to encourage the best suited citizens to become politicians. (CLICK HERE for info)
The Rotary organization is an important part of society and is those of its ilk are becoming increasingly rare. The POP was set up to promote prosperity and stability across cultures and affiliations. The Global Civic Society was created to find local solutions to manage global problems. (CLICK HERE for info) Initiatives like Mark Busse's Creative Mornings are to be applauded for bringing groups together. (CLICK HERE for info)
POP was created to address the incredibly informal and casual process of recruiting political candidates. It is recognized that there needs to be a more rigorous and methodical system to ensure the best candidates are recruited. The last POP session had 40 participants.
Most new politicians have no idea what the full job description is, and are taken by surprise when they arrive in office. POP brings in seasoned politicians and campaign personnel to speak to the participants and to answer any and all questions. Learning to be a politician is not really about theory such as you learn at university; you learn by doing and talking to those who've been there, done that.
Politics is fickle! Doing a great job really has nothing to do with it.
An idea to support potential candidates would be to have employers willing to give them time away to work in public office for a term, providing them with some security when they have fulfilled their time serving in public office.
The Transcribimus project is working to transcribe and post early Vancouver City Council minutes. Volunteers are working on the project, if interested to help in your spare time you can get involved. (CLICK HERE for some info)
Finally, Do you know anyone who would be good in public office? Consider approaching them to get involved.
Meeting adjourned with a toast to friends of Rotary.
