Program:
Rotary International and Toastmaster International formed an alliance a few years back. The purpose of this alliance is to help members achieve personal and professional goals through growing networks, improving leadership and communication skills and thus enhancing the impact you/we can have within our own & the greater communities. CLICK HEREto read more about this alliance on the RI site.
This meeting, in keeping with that alliance, was a collaboration between our club and the Toastmasters. Recognizing both organizations have some commonalities and ways to strengthen one another. We started with Franco Gallo who spoke about “What is Rotary?” for the benefit of those guests who are unfamiliar with us. He talked from two perspectives, firstly from the greater organization perspective & then from the more personal member perspective.
This was followed up by Rohan Aurora introducing his Toastmaster mentors, Louisa Davis & Jim Heeren.
Jim, a long time Toastmaster and now newly introduced to Rotary, spoke about how Toastmasters has benefitted him personally and how it can help anyone speak confidently to anyone at anytime.
Louisa, continued extolling the merits of Toastmasters and in particular, how it can help us as Rotarians in our work – whether it be internally in the club, externally working on projects, and generally promoting the work we do.
Rohan then introduced Stefano Cossalter who recently finished in the top 6 public speakers in the world. Stefano entertained us with his winning speech, The pudding principle.
As is common at Toastmasters’ meetings, our meeting finished with table topics. Deborah Peng led us in choosing members from the audience and giving them a topic on which they were to speak off the cuff for a maximum of two minutes. The ability to do this is to instill confidence in our speaking ability on any topic even for a short moment or two, thereby affecting how we carry ourselves through our days. Thanks to our members who were called upon and stood in front of the group and spoke on those impromptu topics thrown at them. All well done!
If you’d like to learn more about Toastmasters, the Speechcraft for Rotarians/Rotaract club is holding a free info session.
