Special Guest Speaker: Linda Lingle, Former Governor of Hawaii

We are honored to host Linda Lingle, who served as the Governor of Hawaii and now passionately advocates for the transformation of the justice system as it pertains to women. She will be discussing her significant work with the Women’s Prison Project (WPP).

The WPP is an exclusive, all-volunteer group dedicated to creating a paradigm shift in Hawaii's approach to justice-involved women. Disturbingly, our beloved state holds a record in incarcerating a higher percentage of women relative to the total incarcerated populace than any other state.

Highlighting the inefficiencies and repercussions of the current system, the WPP focuses on the fact that the majority of women prisoners at WCCC are non-violent offenders. Their incarceration not only hampers their successful reintegration into society but also leaves a lasting impact on their children, thus perpetuating a cycle of adversity. With a bold vision, WPP aims to decrease the female prison population in Hawaii by 50% within the next five years, and even further, by 75% come 2030.

Governor Lingle's discourse promises to shed light on how citizen-initiated change can circumvent the obstacles of partisan politics and truly make a difference. Her insights and the mission of the WPP serve as a testament to the strength of community-led initiatives and the importance of systemic reform.

We look forward to sharing this enlightening and significant session with you.

Mahalo,
