Presidents Message for September 2016

September is Basic Education & Literacy Month 

Under the direction of Chairman Chris Leinenweber and member Greg Stille, the New Generations committee has many important functions. Very shortly they will be coordinating the Keiki Vision and Dictionary Project. Club members will be visiting the elementary schools in our area to conduct a vision screening for grade 3 students. These students will be also be given a dictionary at this me. 

In February the club will participate in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), a leadership program for high school students who show the leadership potential in their community. It will be held at the Kilauea Military Camp during a week-end in February. 

In January (HRYF), then again in May, this committee will conduct interviews for scholarships. Also, for the first time in many years our club, in cooperation with the Kona Club, is hosting a Rotary exchange student, Tanguy, who is from France. 

You can see that this is a very active committee. Please lend your support. Speak to Chris about becoming a member of the committee. 

I read an article in the Sept. 2 issue of West Hawaii today about James Resor, past president of the Rotary Club of Kona. James has a full me job, is training to participate in the Ironman Kona on Oct. 8, is an active Rotarian, and volunteers with youth in both Kealakehe and Konawaena High Schools. I found it very inspiring. 

Let's all do a little more to support the youth in our community. They are after all our future.
