Solar Jar Project Feedback

Many apologies for the late reply to your email – England trips, DG Visits, RI President visit to South Africa etc seemed to swamped me .….

I would like to thank Chattanooga, TN Hamilton Place Rotary Club for your support during PDG Fred’s year and continued support during DG Debbie’s year.

Stanford is a small community and we also distribute the solar jars to neighbouring communities where there are needs. In June 2017, there were devastating wild bush fires that destroyed around 1,000 dwellings in the Garden Route area of the Western Cape and though this project we supplied 156 Solar Lights to Children who lost their homes and are living in temporary structures with no electricity.

Because of fluctuating exchange rates between the US$ and South African Rand, there can be a small “profit” of a dollar or two between what the cost of the Solar Jars and the $15 that is donated for each light. The Rotary Club of Stanford is contributing this small “profit” to a fund to provide a small basic Fire Fighting Vehicle to the Stanford Community as at the moment it can take 20 minutes for a Fire Engine to get to Stanford from the nearest town 25 km (16 miles) away.

Consol is based in South Africa and has distribution depots in Cape Town (100 miles away) and Johannesburg

During the 2016-17 Rotary year, District 6780 contributed US$ 8,495 which enabled us to fund 564 Solar Lights to children living without electrical power.

If clubs would like to contribute, our website at https://www.rotaryclub.org.za/ has all the details including bank transfer and PayPal facilities.

Thank you again for your much valued support.

Yours in Rotary

Stephen
