Thursday, September 1st at 5 pm. we will hold our meeting in the newly renovated Catch Kitchen on Bayview (previously the Charthouse Restaurant). It’s not a fund raiser, but recognition and celebration of what The Rotary Foundation has done for the Philippines – and the world – especially in the eradication of Polio.  There is N/Cā€‹ for members but a $35/person for guests

Theme: The Rotary Foundation celebration of 100 years of "Doing Good in the World". RI President John Germ is encouraging clubs/Districts to hold an event to recognise this.

Focus: Polio Eradication started in 1979 in the Philippines (Manila) with a Rotary grant of $750,000. This enabled the Philippines to be one of the first polio-endemic countries to be declared "Polio-free" with the immunizations of over 6 million children. It was the precursor to Rotary's pledge in 1980 for a Polio-free world. As you know, that pledge is now very very close to being achieved. Only 19 cases so far in 2016, in two countries.

Special Guests:

The Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines (and Rotarian), Neil Reeder and his wife, Aireen;

  • D5040 Governor Lyn Stroshin and her husband, Alex;
  • The Consul General of the Philippines, Neil Ferrer;
  • Rotary World Help representative.

Note that RWH and TRF have sent dozens of containers to the Philippines since that initial Grant and have been instrumental in providing supplies and support to many impoverished and disaster-affected areas. Richmond clubs have been heavily involved for many years in this project.
