About Rotary Peace Fellowship & a District scholar's Journey towards Rotary Peace Fellowship in 2012

Rotary Peace Scholar Saad Karim

Saad is currently a freelance consultant, has worked in international humanitarian and development since 2002 with various INGOs. He has been based in Africa (Sierra Leone, Liberia, Uganda, Sudan, DRC) and Asia (Timor-Leste, Lao PDR) over the past 18 years. Holds a MA in Political Science (Waterloo, Canada) and Certificates in Humanitarian Leadership (Deakin, Australia) and Peace & Conflict Resolution (Chulalongkorn, Thailand) as a Peace Fellow in 2012.


Most recently he held a senior leadership position with CARE International in Lao PDR as Country Director, responsible for 100+ staff with a diverse donor and project portfolio. Programming focuses on gender equality though key areas of climate change, sexual reproductive health, economic empowerment, nutrition and the reduction of gender-based violence. Experienced in organizational change, policy development and strategic development.

District Chair Gloria Staudt

Gloria Staudt is a Business & Life Strategist, providing consulting, mentoring, training and coaching solutions to improve communications, relationships, teamwork, performance and productivity through proprietary processes. 

Gloria is a member of Royal City Rotary Club, her Rotary contributions include:

  • 3 term Past Club President
  • 12 years of leadership roles at the board level
  • 15 years at the committee level
  • 11 years at the district level
  • District 5040's 2014-2015 Rotarian of The Year
  • Awarded Citation of Meritorious Service award by The Rotary Foundation Trustees for Outstanding Service Doing Good in the World
  • Marketing Director of the 2016 District Conference
  • Mentored the rebuilding of the New West Rotaract club. 
  • District 5040, Chair of Rotary Peace Fellowship since 2008 selecting 9 out of the 10 successful recipients of Rotary Peace Scholars in our district
  • Member of the District Peace Committee
  • Through her leadership in establishing a well functioning Rotary Peace Centers Committee, the Rotary Foundation had acknowledged this and invited our district 5040 to be a Rotary Peace Centers At-Large District to accept applicants from countries where there are no Rotary clubs or districts that have not established a well functioning Rotary Peace Centers  committee like ours. 

Gloria was born in Trinidad, educated, married and worked in New York before relocating to Canada to be closer to family members.  She lives with her husband Richard and family in Burnaby.
