About the event

Everyone knows the story and legacy of Terry Fox.

 

For several years, Sunrise Rotary Club of Quesnel coordinated the annual Terry Fox Run event and it was only natural that we assume responsibility when the club joined forces at the end of 2013.

 

The next two Terry Fox Runs will take place on the following dates:
 - Sunday September 20, 2026
 - Sunday September 19, 2027

 

 

 

Almost word-for-word to last year: 14th September...78 participants (with many 4-legged friends)...beautifully sunny, warm morning.

 

Coming off 72 hours of working the mill shutdown, Rotarian Helen Nygaard once again chaired the event. We forgot to update for last year's numbers - this year, we're definitely over $10,000, not least because the amazing Family Fun team contributed over $8,600.

 

 

 

 

 

15th September...84 participants on what became a beautiful, sunny Cariboo Fall Sunday. No bears this year...

 

Rotarian Helen Nygaard lead our event planning for the first time and did a stallar job, including stepping up to the mic to welcome everyone after her fellow Rotarians so supportively declared "You got this!"

2023...17th September...although wildfire smoke was present, the weather held for our 53 participants who, collectively, raised over $17,400 including a remarkable $12533.95 from Team Family Fun who had already started on 2024 by way of several Christmas cookie orders!

 

Interesting side-note to this year's event: over in the Johnston Subdivision, a grizzly bear was getting plenty of coverage on social media, while Run participants observed both a black bear and a doe and two fawns while out on the River Walk Trail (along with an absurd quantity of bear scat!). Everyone made it back to Lebourdais Park in one piece!

 

Because we posted their picture last year (see below), they insisted we recognize the participation of others and who better than Team Bassett. Evie, Chase, Jersey, Kylie, and Cameron Leeson (and Zoe, of course) walk every year in memory of loved ones claimed by cancer including Evie's husband, Ernie, and we appreciate every step they take and dollar they raise.

 

 

 

 

2022...after the pandemic-enforced cancellation of our 2020 and 2021 events, it was good to get back to our traditional in-person event at Lebourdais Park.

 

Smaller turnout than before, 44, but we suspect that was because people were still getting back into the groove of normal life. Total funds raised was $14,157.42 plus online donations of $3,866 for a grand total of $18,023.42 which included a cheque from Team Family Fun for $12,942.42 that they raised throughout the year from Bottle Drives, Root Beer Floats, Lollypop Pulls...you name it!

 

 

 

2019...the monsoonal rain of the day before acted as a deterrent however a determined group of 80 or so came out to jog, walk, stroll, ride, and push along the River Walk Trail, and were rewarded with warming sun-rays pushing through the clouds shortly after the mass start at 10am.

At the time of this post, we were still adding up the donations.

 

 

2018...cold and wet, but about 150 braved the elements (which seemed to clear just as we headed off). 

$22,000+/- raised, thanks to the amazing year-round fundraising of "Family Fun", the Kopetski family, with $16,574 and a special mention to RBC whose employee team participation earned a $1,000 grant donation to Terry Fox Foundation.
