About this project
When Ukraine was invaded 24th February 2022, it soon became clear a humanitarian crisis was inevitable as citizens fled to safety away from the conflict. Millions left Ukraine altogether, creating a massive need for refugee relief.
Like Rotary clubs across the world, we immediately wondered what we could do.
The national flower of Ukraine is the sunflower, grown on its central and eastern steppes since the middle of the 18th century, cultivated for its seeds, which are eaten as a snack, or crushed into oil, a key ingredient in cooking and an export product of vital importance.
Thanks to a generous donation by Vesey’s, we sold packets of sunflower seeds to raise over $7,400 towards humanitarian relief for refugees from Ukraine. Joining our efforts were the Rotary Clubs of Burns Lake, Whistler, and New Westminster, raising a further $6,000 or so, and a donation of $1,200 from The Station House Gallery in Williams Lake as a result of their own sunflower seed selling efforts.
As this summer progresses, we’ll want to see and share pictures of your sunflowers so will also be holding a photo contest - KMax has already given us gift cards for prizes!
