Mumbai Mobile Library

As stated, while our primary focus is on service and community projects in Quesnel and the North Cariboo, we also look to supporting the needs of others oversees.

 

Those needs are many and varied, and one of the challenges we experience is narrowing down the choices. So we looked closer to home for inspiration, and soon realized how Quesnel has a sizeable population of Indo-Canadians. Conclusion: let's find a project in the sub-continent.

 

Within the world of Rotary International, it did not take long for us to find a request for assistance from Rotary Club of Bombay-Seaface who wanted to to purchase a van and outfit it with books to create a mobile library. By obtaining a commitment from our club as well as partnering with other clubs in Mumbai. they were able to qualify for a Global Grant from The Rotary Foundation - once the money was in place, it was just a matter of time before literacy could be delivered to the outskirts of Mumbai where going to school is considered a virtual luxury. 

 

Having identified the project, we needed to raise the money...and "A Toast to India" was born! Led by Quesnel Rotarian Jack Pannu and his spouse Rami, themselves immigrants from India, we focused the event on the fabulous food, music, and dance...and easily surpassed our fundraising goal, as well as having a great night to remember.
