When we were making arrangements for our 2026 Special Olympics Welcome Back Evening, Northstar Church happily agreed to us using their hall and lobby for the event.
"How much is the rental fee?", we asked.
"Nothing", they replied, "It's a community space."
As wonderful as that was, it didn't sit right with us. For one, a fee was within our budget. For two, they run a weekly community meal program..."They run a community meal program!"
The sponsorship is $500 per meal (they sit 150-200 people every week) so that became the goal for our Happy Bucks, our lunchtime meeting activity during which members pay an amount of their choosing to make personal announcements.
Separate from that, our guests on this year's Seniors Trip to Barkerville passed round the hat on their drive back to Quesnel and gave us $580! Who better to give that money to than the Community Meal Program?!
Having rolled the $80 into our Happy Bucks, we presented $500 from the Seniors' Trip collection to Northstar ahead of our Special Olympics Welcome Back Evening. We anticipate the other $500 will be getting donated within a week or two, not least because of the $200 raised by Rotarian Ashley Schmidt by backing and selling 20 dozen chocolate chip cookies!
