February 28, 2014 ~ This past Thursday's guest speaker was His Worship, Dave MacDonald, the mayor of Port Edward who talked about the present and future possibilities that are being considered for Lelu Island and the surrounding area.

Married with two children, Dave was born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia and has been a resident of the District of Port Edward for 42 years and the Mayor for the past nine years. Here are some interesting facts about Port Edward:  (click on more to read the rest)


 
- It is located 15 km south of Prince Rupert and has a population of 544 residents.

- There are approximately 200 houses in Port Edward and 38 mobile homes.

- The District itself consists of approximately 18,387 hectares, bordered by the Skeena River, Inverness Passage, and mountains north of Highway 16. It is accessible by road and by water.

- Education for children in grades Kindergarten to Five is provided at the new elementary school, while older students commute to the middle school and high school in Prince Rupert.

- The District encompasses two provincial parks, an ecological reserve and a major historical site at North Pacific Cannery. 

- Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant, and include fresh-water and salt-water sport fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and boating. Because of its time-honored presence, west coast native culture is a prominent feature of the area.

Mayor MacDonald and his city councilors recently had the opportunity to visit a couple Liquefied Natural Gas plants in Bintulu, Malaysia, where they got to see, first hand, the operations and environmental conditions of equivalent sized LNG plants being considered for Port Edward.
