Food for 175 kids packed in 20 minutes

"Food insecurity" may be a buzzword, but it's a reality for many Texas children.

Schools provide breakfasts and lunches Monday through Friday, but what about the weekends? Sure, parents should be feeding their kids, but for many reasons that doesn't always happen. So concerned citizens often step up to provide "weekend food bags."

La Grange Rotarians did just that Wednesday, July 12, when Dist. Gov. Shannon Coleman made her "official visit." Shannon and her husband brought boxes of various foods and organized Rotarians to pack the individual items into bags that later will be given to school children.

The food items are carefully selected for nutrition, long shelf-life and ease of use. Kids will be able to fix their own lunches easily.

It took only a few minutes for Rotarians to march around tables stacked high with food items and pack up 175 bags. They will be added to bags other Rotary clubs will pack as Gov. Shannon visits them, resulting in thousands of meals for hungry kids.

"And it's fun," Coleman reminded them. "Rotary is about service, but it's also supposed to be fun."

The La Grange Rotary Club starts the new year with 60 members, making it one of the largest in District 5870. Only 10 clubs in the district have more members.
