Over 180 compete in Emmett Hannes 5k
 

The Rotary Club of Giddings held the first Emmett Hannes Memorial 5k Run/Walk at the Lee County Courthouse in Giddings, Texas on Saturday March 3, 2012.  Over 180 people from Lee County and the surrounding areas participated in the event.  Medals were awarded to the top three runners and top two walkers in each age group.  All proceeds from the event will go to Rotary causes, some of which include scholarships for Lee County high school students and the eradication of Polio throughout the world. The Rotary Club of Giddings plans to make this an annual springtime event.  


The event was held as a memorial to Emmett Hannes one of the founding members of the Rotary Club of Giddings.  In addition to being an active Rotary member, Mr. Hannes was a civic leader in the Lee County community for all of his adult life.  Mr. Hannes and his wife, Helen, touched countless people during their lives.

 

The Rotary Club of Giddings was founded in 1955.  Mr. Hannes was the first president of the Rotary Club of Giddings  The Rotary Club of Giddings’ mission is to serve each other, the community of Giddings, and the world at large by offering friendship, addressing humanitarian needs, meeting literacy needs and by providing vocational assistance.
