Austin University Area Rotary Club Invites you to hear Christina Collazo, Founder of Todos Juntos, discuss their work during COVID-19

On Monday, April 27th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an online-only club meeting. Our speakers will be Christina Collazo, the Founder of Todos Juntos. Todos Juntos works to improve the future of Central Texas by creating a path to academic and economic success for low income families through education and related resources. On April 27th, Christina will talk to us about TJ’s work during COVID-19.

In mid- March Todos Juntos surveyed families to determine how COVID-19 would impact them:

- 78% anticipated their household income will be negatively impacted

As a result:
- 60% will not be able to buy groceries
- 73% will not be able to pay rent
- 85% will not be able to pay bills
- 37% do not have access to healthcare or prescription medication

During weekly calls to Todo Juntos families, staff have learned that some jobs have been suspended, some have been guaranteed two weeks of pay but not beyond, and others have less work and therefore lost income. Some parents continue to work (ex: construction, food service, retail) at great risk to their health and that of their community. We fear for the health and well-being of these vulnerable families.

Todos Juntos has learned that what families need during this time of crisis and uncertainty is a sense of security. While dual-generation education remains at the heart of Todos Juntos, families are looking to us to connect them to resources. During this crisis our students participate in online offerings, but based on feedback many do it more for the connection versus language progression, as what many need through this is to be seen and reminded that they are not alone.
