Nefertitti Jackmon, Executive Director of Six Square: Austin’s Black Cultural District, will talk to us about Six Square's history, goals and progress.  Six Square’s major accomplishments include:

  • Preserving historic landmarks including Downs Field and Rosewood Courts
  • Celebrating black art and culture through the quarterly curated art exhibits, their annual District Cultural Arts Fest, a day of art, music, performance and history across sites in the District, and by hosting conversations, films and culinary experiences celebrating black life and culture.
  • Telling our shared history through historic tours, highlighted landmarks of black architecture and design, historic cemeteries, churches, juke joints and other distinctive places in Central East Austin.
  • Gathering the community when the beloved mural celebrating black culture at 12th & Chicon was removed. Six Square led courageous conversations and the restoration of the mural.

Nefertitti Jackmon has served as the executive director of Six Square: Austin’s Black Cultural District since 2017. She completed Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business Executive Program for Social Entrepreneurship which focuses on human centered design. Her greatest desire for her work in Austin is to dispel myths surrounding black people and black culture and to help develop a sense of pride in the black community by producing culturally relevant programming that preserves and celebrates black art and culture in an intentional way.
