Christmas Party at Eltham North

Members and Guests enjoyed the end of year Christmas Party function at Margaret McPhersons home at Eltham North on Sunday 17th December.

Organised by the Fellowship and Fundraising Committee, the event was a great time of fellowship and lots of fun. It was good to welcome special guests Harald and Sandra Bartelt.
Tag team Jerome and John came up with a funny story that fitted the Christmas theme for a short Sergeant at Arms session. There was no prize for the funniest hat or head gear although the red ribbon and bow on David's hat did attract some comments!

President Michael thanked Margaret for her hospitality in making her home available and wished everyone compliments of the season.

A very fitting end to a good first 6 months of the Rotary year. Check the photo gallery for additional pics.

Editorial

To a joyful present and a well remembered past. Best wishes for Happy Christmas and a magnificent New Year.

As we have come to the end of our activities for 2017 I find myself reflecting, celebrating and contemplating.

As I reflect on the year passed I think of many happy and blessed times and also some sad and challenging ones. Some of us will be missing a person or persons who are no longer with us, others will be celebrating new family members. What a mixture! Through it all I consider myself to be blessed to live where I live to to have so many wonderful family and friends.

The celebration will take different shapes for each of us and we will have individual areas of focus. I trust we will all find something to celebrate especially the message of Christmas.

And then I contemplate a New Year. Who can know what it will bring but I am determined to be positive and full of expectation for good things to come and courage and strength to face the challenges.
To Rotary friends and family everywhere, "Happy Christmas"

The Ramp is up

Riding for the Disabled was formed in Victoria in 1970 and I am not sure when the St Andrews Riding Group for the Disabled, (RDA) based at the St Andrews Horse and Pony Club, was formed.  https://rdastandrews.weebly.com At the present time they cater for approximately 20  people each week suffering from physical and or emotional issues.

Apparently, participating in the Riding Programme not only gives the person a sense of achieving an experience, but also the rocking motion of the horse stimulates the physical actions of the body.

It all started for RCG when Maggie Broom from St Andrews RDA came to talk to the Club about their work. When asked how we could get involved and what was on their wish list we were told about the project to purchase  a new ramp to allow wheelchair and general safer and easier access in mounting the horse. Communication between Maggie, Sharraine Ballao and David Ling continued over a number of months.

RDA had been quoted $14,000.00 for the ramp but after discussions with retired mechanical engineer Steve Jenkenson and the Men's Shed at St Andrews they volunteered to manufacture the Ramp similar to the design of the ramp at the RDA Bundoora.

The Rotary Club of Greensborough donated $1,000.00 and also donations were received from Bendigo Bank and City of Nillumbik. With these new developments the actual cost of the ramp was about $3,000.00.
The ramp was constructed at the Men's Shed. It is approximately 15 Metres Long and 1.8 Metres Wide, and was transported to the Pony Club where it was assembled and painted over three days by voluntary labour from the Men's Shed and David Ling and Bill Carter from Rotary Club of Greensborough.

Assisting the community is not about just donating monies, it is also about volunteering your time in enabling projects to succeed in the most economical way possible. In this case some
$11,000.00 was saved and in doing so  some other projects will benefit from the savings made.

It makes one feel a sense of pride and thankfulness when you see the smile on the face as the riders conquer the task of doing something that had been impossible
for them to achieve.

DVLC Inaugural UP Award

The inaugural UP award for Valley VCAL was presented at the recent Awards Night.

Intiated by the Board of DVLC, The UP award is given to the student who staff have agreed most often and most graciously upholds our VCAL principles. These principles are:
kindness, respect, participation, and safe conduct
President David Ling presented this award to Isabella Salas Bull.

The Awards Night was a great success with very good attendance by Students, Parents, Friends and interested people.

The programme was conducted in unique style as organised by students and generally led by VCAL Coordinator Stracey Wood.
The laid back style was evidenced by the approach taken by the MC for the night.

Representatives from the Rotary Club of Greensborough and Rotary Club of Eltham were in attendance and in conversation agreed to get together to consider options for greater support for the DVLC programme.

Highlights for the night were seeing young people receiving their awards for completed work and hearing some of their stories.

Annual Secondary College Awards

On Monday 20th November, the Rotary Club of Greensborough celebrated with Montmorency and Greensborough Colleges,  the presentation of the Kevin Gillespie and George Upton Awards for 2017.

These awards are presented annually and have been in existence, for  the last  30 plus years.

We were delighted to have the support of both Principals, Allan Robinson from Montmorency and Pauline Barker from Greensborough, together with support staff from both schools.

Six students, from each college (one from each year level) receive recognition with a Certificate and a gift voucher from our club.

The function is celebrated at the Heidelberg Golf Club where teaching staff and students together with their families and friends, were invited to share the occasion, with  a bbq lunch which was provided and enjoyed.

It was indeed a pleasure to welcome  a very special Guest in former Rotarian and  Charter member, Past President with a PHF John Mackey, who gave an overview of  the award and some background on Rotary to the students and guests.

55 Guests and Rotarians attended and contributed to the Rotary Raffle which raised $310.  The huge hamper was organised by Margaret McPherson, Zilis Hardiman and Christine Shields - thank you ladies.

Thanks to the team for their help in setting up and helping to facilitate the smooth running of the event.
