Mark's ReMarks 11
I am sure all members will be very saddened
to learn of the passing of Eltham club member Tony Wason.
Tony was president of Eltham club last year and although gravely ill many times
in that year, did an outstanding job as 'Pres Tony' . He was certainly a great
rotarian and a great fellow and our sympathies go to his wife Faye and his
fellow rotarians in our sister club .
At our board meeting on Monday night we
discussed the current arrangements at Heidelberg golf club .
The feedback to the board so far has been
very positive about the venue.
The meals appear to be the main area of concern.
The golf clubs position is as follows :
They need to charge $ 25.00 to make
provision of meals a viable option. They therefore provide a two course meal of
good quality to justify the cost.
They need to know the number of meals to
provide by midday Tuesday preceding the Wednesday meeting. The club then has to
pay for the number of meals ordered whether they are eaten or not.
To facilitate this arrangement we circulate
a list at each meeting for members to
indicate their meal requirements following week. This is the practice at many
rotary clubs.
The problem we are encountering is that
members are indicating they will attend and eat then do not, without advising Joy Ferguson or George Lim by midday Tuesday, so each week
since we moved to the Golf Club, our Club has had to make up a significant
shortfall in revenue.
This situation clearly cannot continue. It
is definitely not fair to all concerned.
We all know and understand that in today's
busy world it is easy to occasionally be held up at the last minute and not be
able to make it to a meeting, but the Boards view is that if a member indicates
they will be attending for a meal and does not cancel by midday Tuesday if they
are unable to attend , then they will be expected to reimburse the club for the
loss.
On the other hand if you indicate that you
can't make it to the meeting but at the last minute you can, then by all means
come to the meeting but a meal can't be guaranteed.
I will make some time at our meeting in two
weeks time to ask for general feedback and discussion on this subject.
I'm off on a ten day break in one hours
time so I will see you all in two weeks.
