Last Saturday, Betty and I had the pleasure of attending a fund raising function organised by the Rotary Club of Sandy Bay in Tasmania.

Billed as a quiz night, the function was held to raise funds for Interplast and it was expected the more than $8000 would be the result for the night. Betty joined my sister Marion, who is about to join the Sanday Bay Club, in cooking to contribute to the food for the night and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole activity.

The quiz was very well organised and the night inluded sale of goods by silent auction. The President gave a good overview of the work of Interplast and each quiz section included a question related to Interplast material on each table and drew participants attention to the great work being done.

From the Interplast website:

Interplast Australia & New Zealand provide surgical and allied health services in developing countries in the Asia Pacific region by providing free medical treatment and training.

Each member of an Interplast program is fully qualified in their field of expertise and VOLUNTEER their time to participate in an Interplast program.

Interplast volunteers provide free treatment to people living with a disability from a congenital condition such as cleft lip and palate, or an acquired condition such as burn scar contractures.  Treatment is targeted to the indigent population who would otherwise not be able to afford to access services.

Interplast assists with developing local capacity to provide surgery and ancillary services by providing training and mentoring programs for medical and allied health professionals.  All Interplast programs are training programs — leaving a legacy long after the team has gone.
