Clean Water Project supported by Go International Aid and WEARS Australia. A World Relief Australia Project June 2016
- During a recent visit a sustainable water supply was installed with funding for a new rainwater tank and ancillary plumbing has meant that the Project Coordinator could rely on a fresh water supply at the residence and project office, a small investment means a substantial reduction in hardship since the town's continual power outages also meant that the water treatment plant did not have power to treat, disinfect and pump the main supply cutting water off at the office and residence.
- The Aviamp Health Centre suffers continual water shortages during the dry season and small girls of around 6-8 years old were left with the task of carrying water, usually in 10-15kg containers up to 2km from the river to maintain ongoing services at the health centre. On this same trip a bore was drilled using local labour, adding to the local economy, and providing a continuous water supply to the centre. The water from the bore which was fitted with a submersible pump provided water to the existing tank and then the header tank which maintained pressure to all taps within the centre, keeping health services operational without the continual effort of carrying water.
- Re-equipping an existing broken hand pump has also given water security to the Aviamp community, an old well previously dig had fallen into disrepair and the old pump was unserviceable. Refurbishing this pump at a relatively small cost has meant that the community living around the Health Centre also could rely on a sustainable water supply for personal and family hygiene.
