Mrs. Hope Shonk celebrated as Biloxi’s “Teacher of the Year” by the Rotary Club of Biloxi during its June 2, meeting at Mary Mahoney’s restaurant. Mrs. Shonk is a 1st grade teacher at Gorenflo Elementary and a “Chief” for the district’s first grade English Language Arts department. Mrs. Shonk serves on both the Positive Behavior Intervention System committee and the Lead Team committee within Gorenflo Elementary and several district test-building committees. Mrs. Shonk’s nomination credited her with always going “above and beyond” by advocating for all students on a daily basis. Recently named to the National Renaissance Honor Roll for student gains in reading, Mrs. Shonk is also a classroom facilitator of “Move to Learn”. She is married to Brad Shonk, 2009’s Beverly Briscoe Award winner.  The Annual Beverly Briscoe Award recognizes outstanding teacher accomplishments in Biloxi Public Schools. The award is named for the late Biloxi Rotarian Beverly Briscoe who personified the belief that the profession of teaching is indeed noble and those academic and professional accomplishments should be recognized and rewarded.
