CHATMAN NAMED TEACHER OF THE YEAR

October 16, 2012 - Biloxi, MS

Ms. Pheon Chatman, a mathematics teacher at Jeff Davis elementary in Biloxi, is the 2012 winner of the Rotary Club of Biloxi’s Beverly Briscoe Award.

Nominators lauded Chatman for her students’ high test scores, her creative and personalized teaching style, and for motivating others to provide quality instruction and good student-teacher rapport with an ethical, professional, and genuine good spirit.

Chatman’s before and after-school tutoring along with other civic activities brought her additional praise. After losing her son to an undetected heart condition last year, she was instrumental in raising money to place Automated External Defibrillators in local schools.

The award, which carries a $1,000 cash stipend, is named for the late Beverly Briscoe, an outstanding and dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Biloxi who personified the club’s belief that the profession of teaching is indeed noble and that academic and professional accomplishments should be recognized and rewarded.

The Rotary Club of Biloxi meets at noon each Tuesday (except Mardi Gras and holidays) at Mary Mahoney’s Restaurant in Biloxi, MS.
