
UNESCO has since 1967 declared an international observance of Literacy. Yearly the celebrations of International Literacy Day (ILD) by the UN Member States around the world have been taken place on September 8th, to remind policymakers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy for creating a more literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society.
Rotary International has identified 7 areas of focus as organizational priorities, which includes Basic Education and literacy. Rotary International has also identified 12 themes for every month of the year, which are meant to highlight the broad range of Rotary work, and many Rotary club use these monthly themes as guideline for their community project and activities. The Rotary theme of September is Basis Education and Literacy. Throughout this Rotary year (juli 2024 until June 2025), Rotary Club of Paramaribo will support and execute several educational projects for the benefit of the youth of Suriname.
