If you’ve yet to attend an event hosted by the Souhegan Valley “Happy Hour” Rotary Club, then you’re missing out on the best party in town.  This past Saturday, the club hosted their first annual Kentucky Derby Party in true Derby fashion at the Old Amsterdam Bar and Lounge on Temple St. in Nashua.  Club members and visitors alike dressed in traditional (and in some cases too traditional) attire and partied the day and night away – and all to support a local therapeutic horseback riding center, The Carriage Barn, in South Hampton, NH.

The party began at 1pm and was accessorized with an assortment of Derby appetizer favorites, all-day drink specials including the ever-popular, Mint Julep, and even a Nintendo Wii set up on the big screen to add an extra dose of fun.  But perhaps the biggest hit of the day was the incredible selection of raffle prizes provided by our very generous sponsors.  Upon entering the bar, attendees had the opportunity to purchase $1 raffle tickets and spread them out among whichever prizes they desired.  The biggest draws were a pair of Red Sox tickets donated by the Tulley family, a pair of tickets on Southwest Airlines and a timeshare vacation donated by BuyATimeShare.com, a FisherCats suite donated by Devine Millimet, and a host of other great prizes.

After all was said and done, the Souhegan Valley Rotary Club was able to raise over $1,400 of which 50% will go directly to The Carriage Barn.  The other 50% will be put to good use to help run future Rotary events as well as helping to meet traditional Rotary objectives including providing clean water and greater access to the Polio vaccine in 3rd world countries.

So what’s next for the newest club in Nashua? Well the only way to find out is to attend one of their weekly meetings at the Hampton Inn off exit 8 in Nashua on Monday nights from 5:30-6:30pm.  Visitors are welcome to check out the club at no cost and even enjoy some complimentary appetizers and a beer or glass of wine.  For more information, check out the Souhegan Valley Rotary Facebook page and let them know if you’ll be stopping by sometime.
