Joseph, Eddie and Albert Solomon are members of the Good Samaritan.  Joseph is the chief of the Roatan municipal police.  Joseph explained that the Good Samaritan was a group of local men that joined together to form a soup kitchen for the needy senior residents of Roatan.  They serve seniors who are unable to leave their homes.  Joseph further revealed that the organization does whatever it is called upon to do.  They have a BBQ as a fundraiser.  One of the projects that they want to establish is a school for waiters and bartenders.  Within the Good Samaritan there is a lot of talent that have experience in these fields and they want to share their professional training with the local youth.

The main event of the year is a Senior Day which is always held in August.  They have been doing this event for sixteen years and would like to expand it and do one in December.  This year there were 315 seniors attending the Senior Day.

Albert Solomon has served in the US Army for twenty-two years.  He visits the island once a year in August to put together the Senior Day.  Albert expressed concern that the elders of the island were disappearing and we need to embrace them while they are still with us.  The Good Samaritan provide the transportation and food for the event.  Usually the location is provided without charge.  The event has been held at Henry Morgan, Parrot Tree, Sea View, and Mahogany Bay.  Donations come from Coleman Bakery, Luey McLaughlin, Larry McLaughlin, Curby Warren and the members of the Good Samaritan.  Albert said that anything the Rotary Club could do for them would be appreciated.  The next Senior Day will be a Christmas Dinner.

Albert spoke about his early learning experience with the Royal Reader.  He was taught by one of the elder women of the island.  He said that the first things learned are the last things forgotten.  He cannot forget the elders that taught him as a youth on Roatan.

We thank The Good Samaritan for their visit to our club, and hope to be helpful in their future endeavors.
