The Debaters - 2017
The Rotary Club of Surrey-Newton Rotary Club held “The Debaters” high school competition on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Taj Park Convention Centre 8580 132 Street, Surrey. Entry for the debate had been open to all Canadian public school Grade 11 and 12 students.
Debate is the activity that brings the art of reading, thinking and speaking together in one place. This debate competition will help students develops skills and knowledge to be more refined and bridge their transition to post-secondary. The individual skills such as problem solving and conflict resolution learned through debate increase students listening skills, self-confidence and their ability to take on leadership roles. The process for preparing and competing in debates helps develop youth into more engaged citizens and develop skills to critically discuss current political and global issues leading to a broader impact on society.
