Minutes of October 16, 2017

At 07:15 President Bob Guerette welcomed our guests from Mid Coast Hospital and started us off by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. He then called upon Pastor Ron for the Invocation. Ron gave a nice invocation tying the efforts of medical professionals and Rotarians into helping those in need.

Under Announcements Prez. Bob reminded us that our next volunteer date for packing backpacks at Mid Coast Hunger Prevention will be November 14 (second Tuesday of the month).
Bob Beaumont announced that we have a date for the work day at Habitat for Humanity’s new modular home project. It will be Saturday, December 9. We will be working inside so weather should not be a factor.
Prez. Bob said that the District is working on s history project and would like the list of past presidents of our club.
Bill Brillant reported that he had dropped off books for our literacy effort associated with the Food Pantry in Bowdoinham. It was much appreciated. Bill also thanked club members who had contributed books, supplies or cash. He has enough excess to resupply them in the spring should they need it.
There will be a District Visioning meeting in South Portland on October 19.

Russ Andrews led us off in Happy/Sad dollars with happy dollars for he and his wife successfully completing their last 5K race of the year and for completing getting his fields cut so he is ready for hunting season. Bob G. had happy dollars for time at his camp during this stretch of great weather and for going bike riding on the carriage trails of Arcadia with his adult daughter for her birthday. Bob commented that after touring many of the well know national parks our west earlier this summer Arcadia is surely one of the top national parks. Bob Davis had happy dollars for the speakers from Mid Coast Hospital. Bill Brillant had happy dollars for a visit to Ohio to visit his 9 year old step Grandaughter. Joel Merry, dressed very sharply, had happy dollars as he headed to Augusta for a meeting of all the Shreiffs with the Governor and then to DC to represent Maine at a conference on Law Enforcement Reform. Bob Beaumont had happy dollars for the openness and willingness of Brunswick business owners and social service agencies to discuss concerns the homeless have on our community. Ron McLaughlin had a happy dollar for the great fall weather. Gordon had a happy dollar for hearing the stories from all our members. His Presidential question had to do with who was the youngest first lady. Gordon then relayed the unusual story of Grover Cleveland agreeing to be the legal guardian of the 9 year old daughter of his former law partner when that fellow died early in life and then marrying the girl when she turned 21 and he was President. Not likely there will ever be a younger First Lady.

Prez. Bob then had Bob Davis introduce our speakers from Mid Coast Hospital. Mellissa, Community Outreach for the Hospital explained that the Hospital has expanded its capability in performing Orthopedic Surgery and Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy related to that surgery in recognition of the expanding need for knee and hip replacement surgery as advances in surgical technique and in-plant products have made replacement a very viable option for those suffering from severe knee or hip pain, most often arthritic.

Mellissa introduced Dr. Jake Furey and Dr. Tom Kryzak, the two primary surgeons in the new Orthopedic Surgical group. Dr. Jake then gave an interesting presentation regarding the cartilage in the knees and hips and what wears out and what the replacement parts look like. He explained that the need for replacement is most commonly from routine wear and use. Ongoing studies point to genetics as the most likely reason some people experience the loss of cartilage more than others with prior injury, frequently decades earlier, and being over weight as other causal factors.

An interesting, informative presentation – though I’m not ready to schedule it yet.

Hope to see you tomorrow, October 23 when Bill Brillant will give a presentation on the United Way Campaign
