WHERE WE FUND

ANNUAL AWARDS
($29,500 IN 2024-25)

  1. Scholarship/Awards for Victoria-area Students
For many years the Rotary Club of Victoria-Saanich has contributed awards to students at Esquimalt High School where we have established an INTERACT Club. Starting in 2021 this program was expanded to include graduating students in the Victoria region. In 2024 we created an Indigenous Award at Esquimalt High School ($16,000)

  2. Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair
For more than 20 years the Rotary Club of Victoria-Saanich has been a major contributor to the operation of the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair. The fair is held in April every year for students in Grades 4-12. As many as 200 students from more than 20 schools participate and more than 700 additional students visit the fair. The fair organizers send up to 8 students to the Canada-Wide Science Fair where they represent our region. Rotarians serve as judges and award prizes for Environment-related projects. In 2021 a major $2000 prize was established for the Best Senior Project in the fair. ($4,500)

  3. Literacy 1000 x 5
The Rotary Club of Victoria-Saanich has a strong commitment to promote literacy. 1000x5 is based upon the belief that if a child hears 1000 books by the age of 5, he or she will be much better prepared to enjoy and succeed in learning. Wide community participation raises the awareness of the importance of universal early literacy and then we do something about it. ($2000)

  4. Camosun Bursary Fund
The Camosun Bursary Fund was originally created by the Saanich Rotary Club as a way to honour past members. The Victoria-Saanich Club now contributes $5000 annually. Revenue generated by the fund provides money to support several bursaries at Camosun College.
    ($5000 + member donations)

  5. Festival of Trees (BC Children's Hospital)
Each year the Rotary Club of Victoria-Saanich decorates a tree in the Festival of Trees (normally in the Bay Centre) and participates as a GOLD sponsor. Proceeds go to support the BC Children's Hospital. ($3000)

  6. Victoria Hand Project
The Rotary Club of Victoria-Saanich has adopted the Victoria Hand Project (VHP) as a major International effort. The VHP produces upper limb prostheses at low cost and currently provides equipment and support for amputees in Ukraine and Rwanda. ($5,000)
Not all of these groups are listed in the annual summaries but the contributions are included in the yearly total.
