Stories and News
Today’s Rotary luncheon meeting at Run of the Mill began with Greetings from fellow Rotarians, Sue G. and Josh F.  Our President, Ken Farley opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and led the group with a rousing rendition of Grand Old Flag. Fausta led us in the Four Way Test and Karen provided the invocation.

President Ken introduced President Elect Bill Kany to announce any visiting Rotarians and guests.  Bill announced that Todd from Charter Oaks which manages the club’s Past Presidents Fund and Co. B funds had joined us for lunch.

Bernice Wood won the 50/50 with a total of $42!

Steve Morin collected a number of fines following several happy dollars for anniversaries and birthdays.  Mark Tuller shared with the club that the Past President’s fund has now reached $187k.  Bill Kany informed the club that the TA Auction had been very successful. The Island of Misfit Toys led by the club’s past president Denis Elie were all fined a dollar. Other fines included Jackson for his recent TV coverage, Andy for all the great CBC coverage in the media and Earl for his missing Rotary badge.

Given the sunshine and great weather, President Ken announced that the club would be free to enjoy an extended recess as there was no program scheduled for today’s meeting.

President Ken shared with the club that Jackie had the latest sign-up sheet circulating for front desk, greeter duty, Jim McAllister would be holding a brief Charitable Giving meeting at the conclusion of today’s meeting and the Past President’s luncheon committee would also be convening following the meeting.

Julie V. announced that Bingo Sponsorships had been filled, please continue to sell tickets and that volunteers had been lined up for Saturday, May 16th.  Julie encouraged all Rotarians to join the Bingo event as it’s fun for all ages.  Joe M. will be the MC again this year and Earl has agreed to be the Bingo numbers keeper.

Julie also announced that Friday, March 22nd at 8am is a Rotary fellowship opportunity as volunteers will be placing flags in the cemetery for Memorial Day.  All are encouraged to join in.  The event is held rain or shine.  Karen Chasse requested photo ops be taken and forwarded to her for placement on the club’s Facebook page.

President Ken announced that the club’s Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 12th at 7:45am at P&C Insurance.

Alan Nelson informed the club that the Scholarship Committee is successfully progressing with the process of reviewing scholarship applications.  Alan encouraged all Rotarians to participate.

The dictionary project will be completed with the final distribution occurring at Biddeford Primary on May 7th at 2pm.

Dear  Scholarship  Committee Members and  Invited  Volunteers ,

  •       The Scholarship Committee has completed the important work of reviewing all  Scholarship  Applications  from the four (4)  High Schools  we serve  ( Biddeford H.S.;  Thornton Academy ;  Old Orchard Beach H.S.;  and  The Regional Center of Technology ) and  selected  the three (3)  Seniors from each  School as the Finalists for our Personal Interviews on this coming Wednesday , 5/ 13  and Thursday , 5/ 14 .

  •        Each of you is invited to participate in the always impressive Personal Interviews of these remarkable Students for all  or as much of the four hours ( over the two Afternoons ) as you can attend .   The Personal  Interviews are scheduled  for  Wednesday , May  13  at 3: 00  p.m. and  at  4: 00  p.m. ;   and  on  Thursday , May  14  at  3: 00  p.m. ;  4: 00  p.m. ;  and  at  5: 00  p.m.  ( One interview for only 20 minutes ) .   We Interview the three (3) Finalists from one High School at each scheduled Hour .

  •       Because we all work and have other Afternoon commitments , if you can’t attend all of the Interviews ,  please attend on the One Day or the One Hour on each or either Day when you can attend .   We are able to have a  good  Representation for the Interviews because , when one Rotarian can attend at, say, 3: 00  p.m. , but cannot attend  the 4: 00  p.m. Interviews that day for the second High School , there is often another Rotarian who can attend at 4: 00  p.m., but couldn’t attend at the 3: 00  p.m. Hour .

  •       The  Personal  Interviews  are held  at the Biddeford  Branch of  Saco & Biddeford  Savings  Institution  at  Biddeford  Crossing  Shopping  Center on  Route # 111  ( Alfred Road ) in Biddeford .   Because the Bank has limited Customer Parking spaces directly in front of the Bank , we ask that you park on the side or other parking spaces .

  •       I  promise that you will find these Personal  Interviews with the Students to be the Reward for all of your hard work throughout our Rotary Club Year in raising the funds for these  $1, 000.00 per year Scholarships !

See you there !

                                   Yours in Rotary ,

                                            Alan

Fellow Rotarians,

Our 7th Annual Bingo fundraiser is approaching fast.  Only 11 more days to sell your tickets.  If you have sold your tickets you can bring the money with you on Wednesday where I will be more than happy to take it off your hands.  Checks can be made payable to Biddeford-Saco Rotary. We only accept cash and/or checks for this event.  If you have sold your tickets but are not going to be at either of the next two meetings, I will need you to send an e-mail to my home e-mail at villemaire@maine.rr.com or call my cell at 286-5474 & leave a message with the amount of money you have collected.  I only have a short period of time to get the completed paperwork into the state to stay in compliance with our license.  I will be on vacation at that time and will not have access to my work e-mail.

I need your help in obtaining 3 more sponsors.  I have secured $1,100 so far but we need $1,400 to cover the prize money. If we don't get the sponsors, the money will have to come out of ticket sales.

There will also be a volunteer sign-up sheet circulating on Wednesday to help at this event.  If you volunteer to help, unfortunately, you will not be able to play (state law).  We need 2 volunteers to sell the 50/50 tickets from 8:00 a.m. until 9:45ish.We have to draw the winner before the Bingo games start at 10:00.  The other volunteers(4) will be selling the game packages (on-site training will be available) in the beginning & throughout the event as well as verifying that the winning cards are actually winners(by calling out the # listed in the free space on the card).

The Rochambeau has a concession area that has food and also dobbers ($1).  Everything you need for a fun filled morning of Bingo.  Don't forget to bring your "lucky charm" to place near your cards to up your chances of winning!

If you have any questions or know of someone who would be interested in sponsoring a game for $100.00 please don't hesitate to get in touch with me asap.

Thank you all for everything you do for Rotary and for helping to make this 7th annual event the best one yet!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Julie Villemaire
Past President 2010-2011

Fellow Rotarians,

It's me again!  I'm not asking anyone to sell anything or drink (Clynk) anything this time around.  I am looking for some light physical labor.  On Friday May 22nd at 8:00 a.m., the Legion Post 26 needs our help placing the American Flag on the grave sites of over 1500 Veterans in St. Joseph's cemetery on West Street in Biddeford.  They aren't able to do this project on their own and greatly appreciate our efforts.  Our club has been helping with the project since I joined Rotary over 10 years ago.  It usually takes us less than 2 hours to place the flags-less time if we have an abundance of hands!  The members of the Legion will do a walk through of the cemetery afterwards to make sure nobody was missed.  This is a great opportunity to spend a little time with your fellow Rotarians & also get a little exercise.

Please check your calendars ahead of time.  I will have a sign-up sheet circulating on Wednesday.  If you don't sign up ahead and find that you have some time to spare (even 1/2 an hour) please come and join us.  Bring your friends, family and co-workers-everyone is welcome to join in this great community and fellowship event!

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Julie Villemaire
