President Ken Farley kicked off the meeting, albeit a bit late, by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Next up, Don Lauzier led us in the patriotic song. Singing lessons anyone? Jackson Brown led the Four Way Test. Opening ceremonies concluded with Joe Bassett leading our group in prayer.
Bill Kany introduced visiting Rotarians and guests. Carolyn Johnson, District Membership Chair, was the only visiting Rotarian. Jackson Brown introduced his guest, Randy Carrigan, to our club.
We meet almost every week at 12:15 p.m. at the Run of the Mill.
Peggy Bean won the 50/50 – her first time in 20 years! Congratulations Peggy!
Next up, Bill Kany, brushed up on his Master of Ceremonies skills in preparation for the upcoming TA Auction. Unclaimed auction items were auctioned off as follows:
Bill Kany – season parking pass OOB;
CJ Dubois-Cote – 1 month pass to Saco Sport and Fitness;
Jim Audiffred – $150 G.C. to Fashion Floors, tickets to see a Frankie Valley cover band, and after an arduous battle with Bill and CJ, ½ a page add in the Courier which Jim plans to donate to his Church;
Matt Simmons – Old Orchard Beach Surge tickets;
Julie Villemaire – GC to Salon 126; and,
Carolyn Johnson – tickets to see a Frankie Valley cover band.

President Ken Farley had the distinct honor of inducting our club’s 10th new member since January! Jackson Brown sponsored Devan Soloniewicz and she was inducted in to our club at the start of our meeting. Congratulations and Welcome Devan!!! J
President Ken Farley informed the Club that he, Roland Gagne and another Rotarian whose name I didn’t catch, attended the District Conference and had a great time. They heard from a Canadian Polio survivor and were moved by his story.
Julie Villemaire distributed Clynk bags and encouraged our newest members to take a bag. This year our club has raised $906.00 with bottles. Goes to show that every 5¢ counts… that and we have a lot of thirsty Rotarians!! The proceeds go to support our club’s charitable fund.
Julie is also looking for volunteers to put flags on our Veteran’s final resting place at the St. Joseph’s Cemetery, in Biddeford. This will be our 8th year participating in this event. We anticipate that this will take place on Friday, May 22nd, so mark your calendars.
Bingo update! Sell, sell, sell your tickets! This event is taking place next Saturday, May 16 at the Rochambeau Club, in Biddeford. Doors open at 8 a.m.; games start at 10 a.m. Joe is the Master of Ceremonies and apparently Earl is handling the balls! It’s important to sell your tickets prior to the event because they are non-refundable. If it’s a gorgeous day and people do not attend, our club keeps the $20.00 contribution. Half of the proceeds go to support our club’s charitable fund, and the other half goes to support Polio Plus. We are looking for sponsors. If you’re interested in sponsorship, please contact Julie Villemaire.
Spring has finally sprung and school is almost out. It’s time to hand out scholarships to 4 local seniors. If you’re interested in reviewing scholarship applications, and hearing from our community’s best and brightest, please consider joining the scholarship committee. We are meeting this Tuesday, May 5 and Thursday, May 7 at 3 p.m., at Jim Audiffred’s office, 375 Main Street, Saco (across from Dyer Library, ample parking out back). Applications will be reviewed and 3 finalists selected from each of the local high schools, Biddeford High School, Thornton Academy, Old Orchard Beach High School and the Biddeford Center of Technology. Interviews will be held next week. If you have questions please contact Alan Nelson.
Dictionaries will be delivered to the third graders at Biddeford Primary School, this Thursday, May 7, at 2 p.m. President Ken is looking for three volunteers.

Sergeant of Arms, Keith Jacques, solicited happy dollars. Peggy was happy she won the 50/50 raffle and contributed 50% of her winnings to the club; Steve Morin was a proud, doting father of his eldest and youngest daughters’ recent accomplishments; Reuben gave a shout out to hero mom for disciplining her child on national television – the slap heard around the world!; President Ken’s youngest daughter turned 14 (yikes!); Carolyn Johnson celebrated our club’s 100% participation in Rotary Foundation and thanked Roland and Paul D. for their great leadership and commitment; Bill Kany was also a proud, doting father of his daughter’s success at a national competition in Minnesota in which she placed 3rd in the country!; Karen was happy that she recently became Vice Chair of Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union; Matt Simmons just returned from a fabulous trip to Disney World with his son; Joe Basset returned from west Ohio where he observed his brother’s induction; and finally, Devan was happy to receive a warm welcome from our club!
Apparently I didn’t write down who was fined for what purpose!!

Our guest speaker this week was Sergeant Corey Hutchinson, of the Saco Police Department. Sergeant Hutchinson leads all of the investigation work at the Department. He is responsible for overseeing all of it – internet crimes, human trafficking, drug related crimes, homicides, domestic violence. Sergeant Hutchinson informed the club that the biggest problem facing our local communities today is heroin addiction and abuse. The vast majority of crimes committed have a drug component. Property is stolen; businesses are burglarized; and homicides occur; prostitution is taking place; these crimes are happening to support a person’s drug habit in our back yards and our communities. Violent crime is on the rise and the violent crime rate is exponentially higher in Biddeford/Saco than in the not so distance past. It used to be that people fought with their hands. Today people are not afraid to use knives and guns. White collar crime is also on the rise. Be aware of fraudulent money laundering schemes. These criminals are sophisticated and prey upon our elderly population. Community members have lost their entire savings to such criminal activity. The money flows out of the country and once it is gone, it is nearly impossible to recover. We, as members of this community, business owners and professionals, need to take back our communities. What we see on the news is a quarter of what is going on in our neighborhoods. Criminal enforcement isn’t enough. Law enforcement needs their communities’ support. Education, awareness and prevention are keys to overcoming the heroin epidemic in our communities. We should not “mind our business” or “stay out of it because it doesn’t affect me” or “not report it because nothing gets done”. If you know or suspect that illegal activity is taking place near your home or work, report it to the police. Speak up, follow up, and do not tolerate such activity. Do not accept that it’s the way of the world today. As a community, we can be the change and we can make a difference.

Fellow Rotarians,
Our 7th Annual Bingo fundraiser is approaching fast. Only 11 more days to sell your tickets. If you have sold your tickets you can bring the money with you on Wednesday where I will be more than happy to take it off your hands. Checks can be made payable to Biddeford-Saco Rotary. We only accept cash and/or checks for this event. If you have sold your tickets but are not going to be at either of the next two meetings, I will need you to send an e-mail to my home e-mail at villemaire@maine.rr.com or call my cell at 286-5474 & leave a message with the amount of money you have collected. I only have a short period of time to get the completed paperwork into the state to stay in compliance with our license. I will be on vacation at that time and will not have access to my work e-mail.
I need your help in obtaining 3 more sponsors. I have secured $1,100 so far but we need $1,400 to cover the prize money. If we don't get the sponsors, the money will have to come out of ticket sales.
There will also be a volunteer sign-up sheet circulating on Wednesday to help at this event. If you volunteer to help, unfortunately, you will not be able to play (state law). We need 2 volunteers to sell the 50/50 tickets from 8:00 a.m. until 9:45ish.We have to draw the winner before the Bingo games start at 10:00. The other volunteers(4) will be selling the game packages (on-site training will be available) in the beginning & throughout the event as well as verifying that the winning cards are actually winners(by calling out the # listed in the free space on the card).
The Rochambeau has a concession area that has food and also dobbers ($1). Everything you need for a fun filled morning of Bingo. Don't forget to bring your "lucky charm" to place near your cards to up your chances of winning!
If you have any questions or know of someone who would be interested in sponsoring a game for $100.00 please don't hesitate to get in touch with me asap.
Thank you all for everything you do for Rotary and for helping to make this 7th annual event the best one yet!
Yours in Rotary Service,
Julie Villemaire

Fellow Rotarians,
It's me again! I'm not asking anyone to sell anything or drink (Clynk) anything this time around. I am looking for some light physical labor. On Friday May 22nd at 8:00 a.m., the Legion Post 26 needs our help placing the American Flag on the grave sites of over 1500 Veterans in St. Joseph's cemetery on West Street in Biddeford. They aren't able to do this project on their own and greatly appreciate our efforts. Our club has been helping with the project since I joined Rotary over 10 years ago. It usually takes us less than 2 hours to place the flags-less time if we have an abundance of hands! The members of the Legion will do a walk through of the cemetery afterwards to make sure nobody was missed. This is a great opportunity to spend a little time with your fellow Rotarians & also get a little exercise.
Please check your calendars ahead of time. I will have a sign-up sheet circulating on Wednesday. If you don't sign up ahead and find that you have some time to spare (even 1/2 an hour) please come and join us. Bring your friends, family and co-workers-everyone is welcome to join in this great community and fellowship event!
Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
Yours in Rotary Service,
Julie Villemaire

Dear Members of the Biddeford-Saco Rotary Club Scholarship Committee – and Invited Guests / Volunteers:
On Monday, May 4, I will be picking up all Scholarship Applications for our 2015 Rotary Club Scholarships, awarded to a Graduating Senior from Biddeford High School, Thornton Academy, Old Orchard Beach High School and the Regional Center of Technology. That means it is time for us to do our enjoyable work of reviewing the Applications to select the Students who will receive our $1,000.00 per Year Scholarships !
Please MARK YOUR CALENDARS to attend our two important Meetings on : TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. at my new Law Office at 374 Main Street, Saco; AND
on : THURSDAY, MAY 7, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. also at my Office. It is also the Offices of my Landlord’s, Jim Audiffred, Esq. and Dana Lane, C.P.A., located directly across Main Street from Dyer Library. Come in our driveway. Plenty of parking in the rear.
We start on time and, depending upon the number of Applications, we are done each day by 5:00 or 5:30 p.m. The more of us who participate, the faster our work goes, so please make every effort to attend BOTH Meetings !
Because we review two High Schools on each day, if you cannot make it for 3:00 p.m., please come for 4:00 p.m. on that day to review the second High School Applications. The same principle applies if you cannot make one of the two days at all. Please make every effort to come for the other of the two days for the other two High Schools.
For the rewarding Personal Interviews of the three (3) Finalists from each High School, please mark your Calendars for the following week to meet on:
WEDNESDAY, MAY 13 , 2015 at 3:00 P.M. at the Biddeford Branch of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution at Biddeford Crossing Shopping Center, Rt. 111 (Alfred Road). Please do not park directly in front of the Bank Entrance because those limited Parking Spaces are needed for the Bank’s Customers; AND
on: THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. also at S&B Savings Institution at Biddeford Crossing Shopping Center. Again, because we interview the Students from one High School for each Hour, if you cannot make a 3:00 p.m. time, please be there for 4:00 p.m. to interview the three Students from the second High School.
This is an important reason why we work hard throughout the Rotary Year, raising funds ! We provide important Scholarships to the Outstanding Students from the four (4) High Schools we support ! I look forward to seeing each of you on next Tuesday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m. at 374 Main Street, Saco !
Yours in Rotary,
Alan
