Chief Duross
  • October is fire prevention month. The catalyst for fire prevention week came from The Great Chicago fire on October 9, 1871 that killed approximately 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles of the city and left more than 100,000 residents homeless.
  • in 2017 – 1.3 million fires in the U.S. causing 3,400 deaths and a loss of $23 billion.
  • In general, 30% of all fires begin at home from heating, cooking & smoking related problems.
  • Saco Fire Department works with the Planning & Development Departments to set standards for multi-unit inspection programs, fire safety & code compliance overview. 
  • The Knox Box program, allowing the Fire Department to gain access quickly, is growing in the city.
  • Residential sprinklers are not required in Maine. Fires that start in homes with an installed sprinkler system, are out 97% of the time before the fire department arrives.  Approximately $4,000 to install in a new home.

  • Upcoming Event May 2, 2020 – Join Us To Sound The Alarm – A tri-county Community Event in conjunction with the American Red Cross. It’s part of a national push to install 100,000 free smoke alarms and raise funds for lifesaving services during our Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event.
  • Sponsor a Ride to School in a Fire Truck contest for kids.
  • Their current smoke house is 30-years old. They’re looking into replacing it.
  • Recommended homeowners keep bedroom doors closed at night. Should a fire occur, it holds the smoke back.
