Club Meeting May 31, 2014

 

Paul Pace opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the recitation of the Rotary Four-Way Test. Tom Sullivan gave the invocation and club members sang “God Bless America”. As Meeting Leader until Jackie’s arrival, Paul used his executive authority in good spirits to fine each member present $1 who was not wearing his/her Rotary badge.

Announcement: Jackie Guzie announced the Paul Harris Dinner will be held June 28, 2016 at Suffield By The River.  Menu selections needed to be selected in advance.

 

 

Program: Three members asked to speak about important information.

Gail Handley-Sergeant at Arms shared a personal story, about an increasingly popular telephone scam, in an effort to educate and protect members and their families. Scammers are using info off of social media to identify grandparents with grown grandchildren. In Gail’s case, they impersonated her grandson on the phone. He claimed he had been picked up for a DUI and needed $2400 sent to his defense attorney by her because he did not wish his parents to know. He gave her a phone number for a “Mr. Cole “, to follow instructions to make the money transfer. Luckily, Gail called her family first to determine its validity.  Many grandparents have not, and an acquaintance of hers was taken this way for $10,000. Nancy Viggiano added her bank makes an effort to lookout for seniors withdrawing large sums at one time in an effort to stop the scam process.

 

Paul Pace updated folks on the great progress to date of the Packard Golf Tourney preparation. Jed Dery and Frank DiGennaro are collecting gifts from members for the event. This includes bottles of wine, gift certificates purchased by members from local businesses, and any other items of value to generate proceeds from the tourney. Warren Packard attended their prep meeting at 515 pm.

 

Ken Pascoe wished to discuss his involvement and the Rotary Club’s potential full involvement this year in the “National Night Out” at Suffield’s Spaulding School on Tuesday August 2nd. It is a community engagement/ awareness event with the Town’s Police department which talks about drug use, crime prevention, and general interaction with law enforcement as a positive one. They’ll be cooking hot dogs and hamburgers for 1500, and need assistance in purchasing, cooking and selling food to attendees. They may need to borrow members’ gas grills as well. Goal is not to sell food but optimize the event experience.  Lieutenant Ryan Burrell is his primary contact on this project.

 

Birthdays and Anniversaries:  There were no birthdays or anniversaries. The club recognized in celebration the upcoming nuptials of Tom Sullivan’s son.

 

Blue Ticket Winners:  Ken Pascoe had the winning blue ticket, with sides won by Luis Lee and the Gordon Stagg.

 

Queen of Hearts: Charles Roumas also had the winning ticket, but did not select the queen. Next week’s drawing $353+
