Gollie Root Dictionary Project

For many years, the Holyoke Rotary Club located in Holyoke, MA has donated
Webster Dictionaries to every third grade student in Holyoke, South Hadley and
Granby, MA.  We donate approximately 800 dictionaries each year.  This program
was started in our club by Gollie Root, a long time member.  Upon his death we
named the project the “Gollie Root Dictionary Project”.  We always choose the
week of October 16 for delivery in honor of Noah Webster’s birthday.

The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active
readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their
own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at
school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing
line between learning to read and reading to learn.
