Rotary International Grant to the Navajo Nation.   Longmont Rotary Installing Peace Pole
The Rotary Club of Longmont joins Denver Mile High and other Clubs in our District to enable a Rotary International Global Grant to the Navajo Nation. This two-year project will teach young Native Americans cyber skills such as networking and security, and will then follow with funded internships at major corporations where they can employ their newly learned skills.
Additionally, Longmont Rotary will be installing a Peace Pole near the Rotary Bridge, with easy access from the Dicken's Nature Area parking lot.  This 8-foot Peace Pole will have inscribed in eight different languages, "May Peace Prevail on Earth".  The eight languages reflect the partnering relationships of Longmont Rotary and the city of Longmont.  The installation date has not been determined.  This will be the second Peace Pole for Longmont, with the first located in Kanemoto Park.
“I’m a Maker” - Jeff Murray's Vocational Journey

Jeff Murray opened his vocational talk with three simple words that capture his essence: "I'm a maker." That spirit of creativity and hands-on problem solving began early—at age nine—working alongside his father, a drywall and building contractor.

Originally from Iowa, Jeff moved to Longmont in 1995 after earning his degree in engineering and began a career with the Coors Ceramics Technology Division. After retiring in 2013, Jeff once again asked himself, “What can I make next?” That question led him to public service, where he served four years on the Longmont City Council.

Today, Jeff channels his energy and experience into mentoring fellow woodcrafters as a Woodshop Captain at TinkerMill, Longmont’s makerspace. As a new member of Longmont Rotary, Jeff says he’s excited to see what he can “make happen” next—this time, in service to his community.

Meet Carrie Adams: Champion of Youth Leadership
Carrie Adams, a proud graduate of Adams State College, made Longmont her home in 2009.   A natural adventurer and devoted mother of five, Carrie has worn many hats—corporate headhunter, McDonald's manager, high school basketball coach, and educational contractor at Silver Creek High School.

One of her proudest accomplishments is helping to launch the Silver Creek Leadership Academy in 2009. Carrie has played a key role in shaping this innovative four-year program, which fosters leadership skills in high school students. The program progresses from Foundations of Leadership in 9th grade to Community Leadership in 10th, Global and Cultural Leadership in 11th, and culminates in a meaningful Capstone Project as seniors serve a minimum of 100 hours in community-based volunteer work.

Carrie’s passion for mentoring youth and her dedication to community development make her a wonderful addition to Longmont Rotary. We’re lucky to have her leadership and heart in our club!

Barbara Ulick Shares the Impact of Open Door Education
Barbara Ulick, Program Director of Open Door, shared the inspiring work of this 10-year-old program, which equips English as a Second Language (ESL) students with the confidence and language skills needed to thrive in college, at work, and in everyday life. In addition to ESL instruction, the program offers High School Equivalency (HSE) classes covering math, science, social studies, and language arts.

With a team of 16 dedicated teachers, Open Door supports a linguistically diverse community—serving students who collectively speak more than 50 languages. The program collaborates with a wide range of community partners, and to date, over 9,000 students have benefited from its services.

Beyond academics, Open Door creates a space for connection—fostering relationships among students, staff, volunteers, and the broader community. Barbara emphasized the importance of volunteers, noting, "Every student who has had a volunteer coach has passed all their testing."

When asked about their current needs, Barbara shared a short list of school supplies. The Longmont Rotary Club responded quickly—delivering donations to their doorstep.  It’s clear that Open Door is not only opening minds but building bridges to opportunity.

Hippo Rollers: Phase II
The Rotary Club of Longmont is proud to share news of a recently approved District 5450 grant, supporting the delivery of 50 Hippo Rollers to five rural villages in northern Botswana. These villages, located within a 10-kilometer radius of Maun—the home of our partner club, Rotary Club of Okavango—represent some of the most water-insecure areas in the region.
In 2024, Longmont Rotary partnered with clubs in Botswana and fellow District 5450 clubs to pilot Hippo Rollers in the remote village of Khwai. Working closely with local leadership and social workers, six residents were selected to participate based on age, physical ability, and their distance from the water source. After six months of use, our partners at Rotary Gaborone and Rotary Okavango conducted follow-up surveys to assess the impact on participants’ quality of life.  After this analysis, it was determined that additional Hippo Rollers would improve the quality of life and advance the development of other remote villages
