July 1st. starts a new Rotary year, which means new club leadership for Rotary clubs across the globe. The new Rotary International President, Gordon McInally has chosen "Create Hope in the World" as this year's Rotary theme.
On June 27th we will be recognizing Wein's leadership this past year and celebrating the induction of our new club leadership, Dr. Tim Waters and Rose Crispin, serving as Co-Presidents. This model of Co-Presidency will be new for us and exciting as we explore the unique and diverse talents of these two individuals. On June 27th our club will have the opportunity to hear from them both, casting a vision for the year ahead (actually 2 years).
ADDITIONALLY, We will be voting on a change in the by-laws to accomodate the co-presidency model on June 20th. The Nominating Committee will also be presenting their new board nominations for club approval and vote. A quorum is needed for these votes, so attendance at this meeting is important. The club program for that day is especially interesting- Dr. Carol Enright will be sharing the deeper, probably less heard story of Paul Harris and his path into Rotary.
Enjoy Rotary Day Out happening on Tuesday, June 13th. Thanks to Rose and Tim for setting up this event and allowing club members the chance to do some in-person networking and learning. Club members have the choice of three locations: Copper Sky Distillery, Longs Peak Hospital and The Veteran's Community Project. Enjoy your Rotary Day Out !
Chris McVay provided an update on this year's peach sales event, the western slope arrival scheduled for mid-August. This is an easy fundraiser (Chris said that) and the more presales we can confirm, the larger our order and the more funds we can ultimately raise. More details will be rolling out soon. Be thinking how many boxes you would like to order this year!!
The Mission of Blue Sky Bridge is to foster healing and justice to end child abuse. Executive Director, Gina Earles joined Blue Sky in 2012, stating the non-profit was established to provide a safe and supportive environment for abuse victims where a neutral, professionally-led forensic interview provides case information for all participating law enforcement, judicial and social service agencies. Blue Sky Bridge’s Child Advocacy Program collaborates with other agencies such as law enforcement, the Department of Housing and Human Services, the District Attorney’s Office, County Health, Mental Health, and Victim Service Programs to provide a comprehensive, supportive and professional response to child abuse cases.Their school-based Education and Training Programs help ensure that kids know they are the boss of their own bodies and that they, and the adults around them, know where to turn for help. Gina stated that 42% of their referrals come from Longmont. To learn more about Blue Sky Bridge, go to blueskybridge.org Gina announced an upcoming event that will be held in Longmont. "A Moveable Feast" is a progressive dinner. Rotary member, Emily Vallery will be one of the hosts for this event held on September 9th.
Melanie Thibodeau, from the Alzheimer’s Association provided the club with both foundational information along with the latest news in research. We currently have six million Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease. Did you know that women are twice as likely to contract the disease? Alzheimer’s is not considered a normal part of aging. The term dementia is actually an umbrella term for a set of symptoms, including loss of memory and other thinking abilities severe enough to interfere with daily life. Common diseases include: Alzheimer’s disease, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body, Frontotemporal, Huntington’s and Mixed Dementia. 70% of these dementia related conditions as of the Alzheimer’s type.
Can anything be done to prevent? YES- Research continues to point to exercise, eating healthy, getting enough sleep, quit smoking, and protect your head. A “heart healthy” lifestyle is also a “brain healthy” lifestyle.
Eleven years ago the Alzheimer’s Association moved from chapters to serving under one umbrella. The 34/7 hotline is 800-272-3900. The Alzheimer’s association offers free education- on-line and in person. They have Community Resource finders along with specific groups to support individuals with targeted needs (i.e. LGBTQI, bereavement, respite care…). The Alzheimer’s Association is now a partner with AARP. The local Alzheimer’s Walk in Boulder will be held on October 7th. Melanie also mentioned Rotary International’s pledged commitment to support and raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association. Thus far Rotary has raised $890K. Advocacy remains an essential need for both individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and their care givers. New mediations continue to be introduced, however, access can be difficult.
Welcome to Longmont Rotary!
Since 1919, Longmont Rotary has served this community through service projects such as winter coat drives, bell-ringing for the Salvation Army, etc.
“Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.”
Our club, community, nation, and world need each one of us more than ever. I invite you to be a guest of our club by attending one of our meetings, enjoying our fellowship, and finding out how we can make our community, nation, and the world a better place.
Together, we will make a difference!
