Past Club President, Andy Lee, gave the Moment of Inspiration, weaving together Rotary's commitment to Polio eradication and the Four-Way Test….."In 1985, Rotary International made a bold promise: to eradicate polio, a disease that paralyzed thousands of children every year. It was a daunting goal—global, complex, and seemingly impossible. But Rotarians applied the Four-Way Test to guide their work. Is it the truth? Yes—polio was a devastating reality we could confront. Is it fair to all concerned? Absolutely—protecting children everywhere benefits humanity. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Definitely—partnering with communities and organizations like the WHO forged lasting bonds. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Undeniably—eradicating polio saves lives and futures.
That promise sparked PolioPlus, Rotary’s campaign to vaccinate millions. Rotarians raised funds, volunteered, and advocated tirelessly. Today, polio cases have dropped by 99.9%, with only a handful of cases left in the world. This historic effort, driven by Rotarians like us, has brought us to the brink of wiping out a disease for only the second time in history. One commitment, guided by the Four-Way Test, has saved millions of children from paralysis.
This story reminds us that Rotary’s strength lies in our ability to dream big and act with integrity. The Four-Way Test isn’t just words—it’s a compass for turning vision into impact. Whether we’re funding scholarships, building clean water systems, or mentoring youth, these four questions—truth, fairness, goodwill, and benefit—ensure our service endures.
So, my challenge today is this: let’s channel the courage of that 1985 promise. Apply the Four-Way Test to your next Rotary action. Ask yourself: Is my effort true? Is it fair? Does it build goodwill? Will it benefit others? Whether it’s a small local project or a global grant, your step forward, guided by these questions, can spark change.
