Longmont Rotary members welcomed an engaging presentation on the remarkable success of NextLight, Longmont's municipally owned fiber internet service. Valerie Dodd, Executive Director, credited former Mayor Leona Stoecker and community leaders whose vision in 1996 laid the foundation for a city-owned fiber network, despite legislative challenges that initially prevented municipalities from providing broadband services. Their perseverance ultimately helped pave the way for communities across Colorado to build their own fiber networks.
Today, NextLight serves nearly 30,000 customers, reaches approximately 90% of the community, and has captured over 70% of the local market while maintaining affordable pricing and exceptional customer service. The organization remains committed to digital inclusion through discounted internet service for income-qualified households and support for nonprofits and community programs.
Members also heard about exciting future plans, including a new Main Street customer experience center, partnerships with Front Range Community College to develop fiber optic workforce training, and initiatives to attract innovative businesses to Longmont. The presentation highlighted how NextLight's financial strength allows it to reinvest in the community while keeping rates stable.
The presentation demonstrated how bold community leadership, long-term vision, and local investment have made NextLight a nationally recognized model, strengthening Longmont's economy, enhancing quality of life, and ensuring residents remain connected for years to come.
