Samuel D. Smith was inducted into our club on September 25th.   We invite our new members to share some information about themselves.  Sam was the president of the Rotary Club of Evergreen for Rotary year 2014-2015.  It is with great pleasure we will now get to serve beside him.

Sam shared with us.............

"It is an honor to be a member of Longmont Rotary, which has an inspiring history. I will briefly cover some personal items, my career, my rotary background and not-for-profit leadership, hobbies and education.

Personal Items:  My wife, Linda, and I grew up in Atlanta, GA where we were high school sweethearts. We were married 51 years in September. We moved to Longmont in February from Evergreen, CO to be closer to our daughter and her family which includes a wonderful 13 year old granddaughter. We traded bears and mountain lions for bunny rabbits and it is 3,000 feet lower here.

Career: I retired from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland in 2007 as senior vice president after 35 years with the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and Cleveland. Before that I was a Naval Officer aboard a destroyer in Vietnam. My focus at the Fed was in bank operations, payments systems and financial management, were I was CFO.

If I have a “claim to fame” it was implementation of Direct Deposit of Social Security payments in 1975. It built the infrastructure for the Automated Clearing House (ACH), which now handles most of the non-cash payments in the nation. Before retiring I implemented the pay.gov website through which payments are made, electronically, to the U.S. Treasury. An education for me was attending Fed Cleveland’s Board meetings as SVP for 21 years, where the Bank’s position on interest rates were approved prior to the Federal Open Market Committee meetings.

In retirement I have consulted with Banks on a variety of issues and I am a guest lecturer at the University of Denver’s Daniels School of Business.

Not-for- Profits:  During my life I have been involved with not-for-profits to support my community. I have been Moderator of the First Congregational Church of Hudson, Ohio, Board Chairman of Beech Brook, a 166 year old Cleveland charity for abused and neglected children, and President of the Country Club of Hudson.

I was president of the Rotary Club of Evergreen for the 2014-2015 year. I served as President of Sculpture Evergreen that places permanent and temporary public art throughout the Evergreen area.

Hobbies:  Linda and I enjoy golf and going off road in our Jeep Rubicon with the Evergreen Jeep Group. I shoot sporting clays once a month and trout fish when can. Winnie, our 13 year old English Setter, is a constant companion.

Education:

BSIM Georgia Tech

MBA and MPA Georgia State University

Graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University"

Thanks Sam!
