Elaine Waterman, Executive Director of the Firehouse Art Center, gave Longmont Rotary an engaging overview of the organization’s role as a creative and cultural cornerstone of the community.

Waterman highlighted the Firehouse’s three key areas of work: exhibitions, education and cultural events, all underpinned by a strong commitment to community.
ts educational programs reach children, teens and young adults through initiatives such as Slay the Runway, a free fashion-design program supporting LGBTQIA+ youth and allies; art classes for Saint Vrain Valley School District students aged 18–21; and a Mexican artesanía residency that brings bilingual traditional arts into Title I schools.
The Firehouse also offers ceramics, workshops and opportunities for creative groups to connect. Its major community event, ArtWalk on Main, brings Longmont together through more than 200 booths, six performance stages, live demonstrations, family activities and a Kids Market featuring young entrepreneurs.
Waterman described the Firehouse as a place where people can find their creative voice, build connections and celebrate Longmont’s diversity. With only three staff members, the organization achieves an impressive amount through volunteers, partnerships, grants and community support.
She encouraged Rotarians to visit, participate and support the Firehouse as it continues its 36-year tradition of making art accessible to everyone.
