The SCOPE books project, managed by founder Dr. Pat Colfer has been collecting used books from multiple sources, then meticulously sorting, repairing, and packing the books and shipping them by containers since 2009 to Kenyan primary schools. Dr. Pat Colfer has now recently handed over the running of SCOPE books to a new board with a view to increase books donations and expansion of capacity to deliver services more effectively.
SCOPE has established libraries at over 300 primary schools and developed leadership teams at over 50. Close to one million (977,458) books have been shipped to Kenya. Colorado volunteers help in collecting, sorting, repairing and shipping books. Spanish language and other children’s books not suitable for Africa have been donated to local organizations.
