Charles Mandel is the April 2018 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. He is in EASTERN’s Construction Technology program and a senior at Abington Senior High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN’s faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for
this honor.

When Charles was in tenth grade, he was not sure what type of career he wanted to pursue in the future. He visited EASTERN with hopes of finding a career and technical program that would be of interest to him. During the visit, Charles met Jeff Pakula, EASTERN’s Construction Technology Instructor, and learned more about the program. He realized that this was the ideal program for him since he enjoys working with his hands. Career
objectives in the Construction Technology program include Carpenter Pre-Apprentice, Exterior Remodeling and Installation and Roofing and Siding Helper.

At EASTERN, he is involved in the student leadership organization, SkillsUSA. Charles was selected by his instructor to attend the Career and Technical Student Organization Leadership Conference last November and as the SkillsUSA Construction Technology Class Representative. Charles was part of the Quiz Bowl Team that came in second place at the SkillsUSA District Competitions held January 30 and January 31, 2018 at Middle
Bucks Institute of Technology.

“Charles works hard and is extremely determined,” said Jeff Pakula, EASTERN’s Construction Technology Instructor. “He has set college and career goals for himself that I am confident he will attain. He takes direction well and is not afraid to push himself.”
After completing the Construction Technology program at EASTERN and graduating from Abington Senior High School, Charles plans to continue his education at Penn College of Technology where he will pursue a bachelor’s degree in construction management. Ultimately, Charles would like to own his own construction business.
