Building a Community Compost System

Please join us in building a Community Compost at the GoggleWorks Gardens!

Composting is the process of taking food scraps and garden waste, and allowing it to break down into rich fertilizer. We take this beautiful fertilizer and add it back into our gardens as our main source of nutrients allowing us to grow organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs. This method of recycling our waste back into the land allows us to divert food waste from landfills, turn yard waste into fertilizer and educate our community on the final step in a cyclical gardening process.  

Composting systems in community gardens are common but often are only big enough to accommodate the waste created in the garden.  We are building a compost system that allows us to not only utilize the waste from our gardens but also from the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts main campus, the Lauer’s Park Elementary school and the homes of our neighbors. We are creating a compost system with the scale to accommodate community members bringing their compostable materials to the garden and then, once the compost is finished, redistribute it as bagged finished compost back to them.

This project is sponsored by the West-Reading Rotary Club, and a matching grant from the 7430 Rotary District. Composting aligns nicely with our 7th Area of Focus to Protect our Environment!
