Smoky Hill Celebrates Its 32nd!
 
 
Smoky Hill Rotarians and guests gathered Monday night to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the club's charter. The event was held at the Perfect Landing Restaurant located in the Centennial Airport. It was a great night of fellowship and good food organized by Club Services Director Nancy Jones (Yeah, Nancy!!)
 
 
 
 
 
All four remaining charter members, Gary Fletcher, Bill Maclay, Jeff Kaes and Terry Remigio, were in attendance. 
 
 
President Paul Urtz delivered a brief address to the troops, including a short history of the club. Rotary legend Cliff Dochterman was there 32 years ago to deliver Smoky Hill's charter. There were 30 charter members present at that ceremony in January of 1983. One of the first acts of the club was to ban fines and singing (everyone has to know his or her limitations). The club's first fundraiser was the Great Pumpkin Sale, Charley Brown, which raised a whopping $80.44, a far cry from the current golf fundraiser, or the Ritz fundraiser before that! One thing I did not know-the club banner was designed by a student from Smoky Hill High School. I wonder where that person is today? In 1987, Smoky Hill was one of the first Rotary Clubs in the world to remove gender from its bylaws. Talee Crowe became one of the first woman Rotary club presidents and then one of the first woman District Governors in the world. One of the most significant achievements in club history was the chartering of a new Rotary Club in Oradea, Romania. The relationship with Romania continues to this day. I think we can all be proud of 32 years of service to people around the world.
