President Paul Urtz began the meeting Monday, one of the loveliest days of the spring so far. Almost a shame to be indoors. Almost. A Monday Rotary meeting is always welcome, whether to celebrate the day, or escape from it. It is great to be a Rotarian, especially a Smoky Hill Rotarian!

Dave Fisher was our speaker Monday, speaking on the topics of work place violence and firearm safety. Dave is a retired commander of the Greenwood Village Police Department. He was a cop for 35 years with various departments beginning in Gillette, Wyoming. He now give programs on safety to realtor associations and groups on ways to keep safe while in the job. He also teaches firearms safety courses.

In Honor of St. Patrick's Day-From One Irishman to Another
Joe is walking through a graveyard when he comes across a headstone with the inscription "Here lies a politician and an honest man."
'Faith now,' exclaims Joe, 'I wonder how they got the two of them in one grave."
'Joe and his wife are in bed one night and they hear the neighbor's dog is barking its head off in the garden. Somewhat disturbed by the noise, Joe explodes, 'Botheration and that!' and storms off downstairs.
He comes back upstairs five minutes later and his wife asks, 'What did you do, Joe?'
Joe replies with a wide grin, 'I've put the dog in our garden so I did, now let's see how they like it.'
Joe lost a hundred dollars on the Notre Dame basketball game. He also lost another hundred on the television replay.
Joe always slept with his gun under his pillow. Hearing a noise at the foot of the bed, he shot off his big toe.
'Thank the Lord I wasn't sleeping at the other end of the bed,' Joe said to his friends in Donegal's pub. 'I would have blown my head off.'
Last week's question: One of my favorite Beatles songs is "Yesterday". Paul McCartney woke up one morning with the complete tune in his head, so he sat down and played it so he wouldn't forget it. It took awhile to compose the lyrics, so the song was given a working title and lyrics. What was the working title? For bonus points, what was the first couple of lines of the working lyrics? Answer- McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagarised someone else's work. When he was convinced it was in fact his own work, he began writing real lyrics. In the mean time, as Lennon and McCartney were known to do, a substitute working lyric, titled "Scrambled Eggs" (the working opening verse was "Scrambled Eggs/Oh, my baby how I love your legs"), was used for the song until something more suitable was written. (PP Jeff Kaes sent me a Youtube video of McCartney and Jimmy Fallon singing the entire song with the Scrambled Eggs lyrics. You really need to go and listen to it.)
This week's question: It is baseball season, so here is a baseball movie trivia. Ray Milland starred in a movie about a college professor who accidentally invents a substance which repells wood. He decides to become a professional pitcher, rubbing the substance on the baseball making it un-hitable by wooden bats. Name the movie. Answer next week.
