Dave Fisher was our speaker Monday, speaking on the topics of work place violence and firearm safety. Dave is a retired commander of the Greenwood Village Police Department. He was a cop for 35 years with various departments beginning in Gillette, Wyoming. He now give programs on safety to realtor associations and groups on ways to keep safe while in the job. He also teaches firearms safety courses.
 
Some highlights of Dave's talk:
 
 
 
*While a police officer, Dave was involved in the initial response to 9/11 and the ramp up to what would become Homeland Security. He was also involved in a support role in the Aurora movie theater shooting. He also helped investigate the Black Forest fire a year or so ago, which investigation continues to be ongoing.

*In conjunction with his new vocation, he appeared on the TV show, "Don't Be a Victim."

*To prevent becoming a victim of work place violence, the most important step is to be aware of your surroundings and act on any threats or suspicious activity. Crime is a frequent occurrence. A crime needs a place, a victim and an offender. Be aware and prevent crime by leaving somewhere that looks dangerous. This breaks the cycle of crime.

*Report suspicious behavior. Even if you are not the target, someone in your workplace may be saved by just talking about a situation with your boss or fellow employees.

*Realtors are particularly at risk since they frequently interact with people they don't know while showing homes, etc. You can minimize your risks by prequalifying people (getting to know them, at least to an extent), having someone with you, and by registering them at your office before going out to see a home.
