Meeting Notes
President Denny Pasantino brought the meeting to order today with This Day In History.
1920: Philadelphia Athletics President Thomas Shibe denies charges that baseballs are livelier. Denny googled his name and found this in his obituary: Shibe was a partner in the athletic goods firm of A.J. Reach, Wright and Ditson. He was a leading factor in the manufacture of baseballs and that part of the plant was under his supervision. He also invented much of the machinery used in the manufacture of baseballs. Botton line, he may have lied!
1927: American Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller sets a new world record of 51 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, which stood for 17 years. Upon hearing the record breaking time, Weissmuller let out a very peculiar yell, which brought Jane, Cheeta and the entire audience to their feet.
1986: Steve Garvey, a 16-year major league veteran and baseball's Mr. Congeniality, was thrown out of a baseball game for the first time. As the on-deck batter, he argued the conclusion of a triple play on a call at home plate. According to the umpire, Garvery was ejected for drawing pictures, signs and gestures in the dirt. Apparently the hand that Garvey drew was missing a thumb and three fingers!

PLEASE NOTE: Our club has agreed to do an off-site packaging event at the Colorado Feeding Kids warehouse on June 12. This is a hands-on project, that will have us packaging food for local food banks. The address is: 2830 S Zuni St., Englewood, Co 80110. We will meet at there Noon or shortly thereafter. Mark Rank will have box lunches for us to enjoy. If you have any questions, please contact Pat Pogue.
June 19 will be the last "Jeff and Denny Show" of the year. Put this on your calendars-whether to be sure to come or to be sure to stay away, is up to you.
Bev and Betsy shared about their recent trip to Romania and brought back a number of Rotary Flags from their travels.
The four of them traveled with three members of the Oklahoma City Rotary Club.
Here is our journey:
Stop 1: Oradea: meet with officials from Beius Hospital to discuss proposed Global Grant for urology equipment. Also, met with Oradea RC members.
Stop 2: Satu Mare: Dinner with local RC members. Exchanged flags. Visit to hospital to see pathology lab equipment (Oklahoma City project - we did not contribute).
Stop 3: Cluj: Attended Cluj-Nopaca RC meeting, exchanged flags. Visited hospital to see monitors in neonatal and cardiology. Also saw future possibilities. Attended installation ceremony and dinner for six clubs in Cluj area.
Stop 4: Constanta and Danube Delta: Various activities with local RC, visited children’s hospital project (we did not contribute), 2 day trip to Delta with RC, Twin Club ceremony. Smoky Hill and Cetatea Tomis are now twin clubs. It means we will stay in touch and possibly do projects together. District Governor attended the ceremony. Club from Israel also visited that weekend, exchanged 2 flags.
Stop 5: Mangalia: Met with local RC members who asked us to participate in their projects, exchanged flags.
The District has designated the weeks of July 17 and 23 as "Bring a Friend to Lunch Weeks". SHRC is currently in its 36th consecutive "Bring a Friend to Lunch" week.
GOLF NEWS: We are just 60 days away! Please close on corporate sponsors. We need a full 144 golfers and we're not there yet!
Nancy requested suggestions for programs for the next Rotary year.
We welcomed a number of guests today. We had 2 folks from Oregon who are working to promote the 'highly efficient biomass stoves'. This product has been purchased by other Rotary Clubs for their communities to use in times emergency or when needing to cook for large numbers of people. This stove can prepare 250-600 meals a day and is highly energy efficient. You can get more information about this company at info@instove.org. We also welcomed Stewart Williams from Australia and District 9810. He represents a very small club of about 18 people that manage to give back to their community $40-50,0000 annually. He was also pleased to share that next year's international President is from his club!
