News from Smoky Hill Rotary-Jan. 19-
 
 
Monday's meeting was held in a different room at the Summit. A little cozy, but we are nothing if not adaptable. It is the Sergeant at Arm's duty to make those kind of arrangements. Someone accused Sergeant at Arms Gary Fletcher of deliberately choosing a small room in order to use forced perspective to make himself look taller. Didn't work.
 
 
 
And now to the rest of the happenings at Smoky Hill Rotary:
 
President Paul Urtz attended the mid-year president's meeting over the weekend. Paul said it kind of recharges the batteries for the second half of the Rotary year, and was a good experience. One thing to put on everyone's calendar's is the District Conference being in Keystone May 1-3. Paul will be there, and hopes he won't be alone so make your plans to attend.
Drum roll, please!! President Elect Dave Maxwell disclosed that the theme for the next Rotary year is "Be a Gift to the World". As his own gift ot us, Dave named his board Monday. Those serving (pending approval by the club will be:

Charter Night is set for Monday evening, January 26, 6:00 pm at the Perfect Landing restaurant at Centennial airport, so there will be no lunch meeting on that day. For those of you who have signed up already, Club Services Director Nancy Jones  said that Friday will be the last day to call her and cancel without having to pay for the event. She will be emailing directions to the restaurant.   
 
Just a reminder-on Feb. 12, Smoky Hill Rotarians will be asked to go the Children's Hospital from 6:30-8:30 pm to make various arts and crafts projects with kids and their families. PP Al Horton is looking for 8 to 10 Rotarians. Spouses and youth over the age of 10 are welcome. Again, the event will be at Children's Hospital at the Anschutz Medical Center, 13123 E. 16th Avenue, Aurora. We will meet in the main lobby.
 
The State of the State luncheon is set for Jan. 23 and 11:30 in the Downtown Sheraton Hotel. The cost is $50 per person. Lt. Governor Joseph Garcia will be the speaker this year. If you are interested in going, you can talk to President Paul for more details.
 
The club's next service opportunity at Ronald McDonald House is set for Wednesday, January 28, 4:15 pm to about 7:00 pm. PDG Talee Crowe still needs two more people to help with that event, so if you can make it, give her a call.
 
  
Smoky Hill Rotary was please to welcome back Bobby Pace, Associate Professor, Political Science with the Community College of Aurora and two of his students. CCA has taken its Model United Nations program to the next level – to the national conference in New York City this March. CCA is the only community college from Colorado currently scheduled to attend the national event and one of only four community colleges in the nation to join 5,000 other delegates from universities across the globe. In total, 17 CCA students will get to experience the national conference. CCA's contingent in New York will be representing the country of Ethiopia. The selection was requested specifically because of the City of Aurora's Sister Cities relationship with the city of Adama, Ethiopia. In support of this wonderful program, Smoky Hill Rotary present CCA with a check for $250. Congratualtions to all concerned.
 
 
Smoky Hill was equally pleased to have two distinguished guest from DAVA (Downtown Aurora Visual Arts), Krista Robinson, Program Manager, Prtable Art School and Grants, and Boris Cochajil (age 13), a job training student at DAVA. Last June, DAVA was given he National Arts and Humantiies Youth Program Award, our county's highest honor for your arts programs. Boris went to the presentation ceremony and got to meet First Lady Michelle Obama. Krista said that DAVA is expanding its facility, so there is a bit of a construction zone around it, but it will be well worth the trouble. It will allow them to expand their graphic design, sound and film making programs. It will aso allow them to expand their Middle School program building life skills and raising kids awareness of the opportunities in science. Boris, in addition to being a DAVA student, is a graduate of Young RYLA. Boris said he is grateful for the leadership skills he learned there. congratulations to DAVA and to Boris.
